I've been having fun with a 1858 Remington revolver and a .45LC conversion cylinder. I would like to load some 147gr .452 roundballs in the LC cases using TrailBoss.

1) Anyone have load data for this combo?

2) What is the proper way to crimp the roundballs?

3) Do I need an over-powder patch or felt?

4) Do I need to fill the extra space in the case with a filler media? I saw on another forum where it is common to use instant grits over a felt wad before seating the ball. Is this need?

(I've been told Speer #10 or #11 had data for roundball LC loads. Anyone have those manuals?)

I have the Speer #11. I can check it tonight. I would use an over powder wad myself.

Speer #10 lists:
.454" Speer round ball weighing 141 grains:

HS-5 - 5.7 = 580
SR-4756 - 5.0 = 565
SR-7625 4.5 = 556
Unique - 4.5 = 632
WW-231 - 4.0 = 544
700X - 4.0 = 566
Bullseye - 3.2 = 553
Red Dot - 3.2 = 568

No mention of over-powder wad, seating depth, or crimp.

I believe if I were doing it, I would seat the ball below 1/2 way enough to smear bullet lube grease or Crisco in the case mouth next to the ball.

I doubt flash-over chain-fires would be likely with the small charges of smokeless, but the grease should seal the ball enough to prevent any chance of it, and also stop leading.

I would not use an over-powder wad or filler with the faster burning powders.

I doubt recoil would be enough to require a crimp to keep the ball in place.
