Hi, I need some info on some SKS rifles I'm eyeballing.

They are both norinco, the first has a 10 rd mag and no mods, far as I can tell.

The other has a 20 round magazine (no star on it), could this be original, or are all 20 round magazines on SKS rifles aftermarket?
The one with the 20 round magazine also has a small sight mounted on it. Is that desirable in an SKS?

I'm mostly concerned with the possibility of feeding issues with the 20 rounder.

The aftermarket mags for a SKS are all junk. It is much quicker to reload with stripper clips. What kind of sight is mounted on the rifle? If it is drilled and tapped into the receiver, walk away quickly. A stock SKS is worth 300-400 depending on who made it. A bubba custom is worth around 150 tops......chris3

Stay away from 20 rds mag. If it doesnt have the original CHICOM star, then its no good. The 10 rd is the way to go .

Again if its a 20 rder with Chicom star, its a go. But again, its ugly looking and adds weight on the bottom .

Not necessarily so. I've had some detachable 20 and 30 round aftermarket mags that worked quite well thank you. Some needed tweeking some didn't. That being said, the only aftermarket mags I use now are 5 and 10 rounders. I do agree that the original 10 rounder and stripper clips are the way to go.

Another, Not necessarily so,
The red star 20 rounder(fixed) is a aftermarket part and
has a reputation for feeding issues. The 20 rounder(fixed)
with no star (also aftermarket) is very reliable and sells for
$50-$75 on G.B. and they are getting hard to find. Tapco 20
round mags also work quite well.

If it is a detachable polymer mag from Tapco it should be fine, I have been using these for my SKS since they came out and have no issues with them. I would however agree that keeping an SKS stock and using the fixed 10 round mag with stripper clips is your best bet and am wishing I had never bubba'ed mine but that is the price I pay for being young and dumb.

Yeah, you might think now that 20 round magazines are a big deal, but to be honest, reloading with stripper clips is really quite fast once you get the hang of it.

Not true about the Yugos, mine is a Yugo and while I have changed the stock to a tapco one and gone the whole 922r compliant route, I tested it with just detachable mags and it worked fine. Some Yugos can use the original stock with modification others require a new stock to go with it.

I will vouch for the standard 10 round fixed magazine. I replaced my fixed magazine with a 20 rounder... ran into feeding issues right after another. I tinkered with it and just couldn't resolve it. I put back the standard fixed magazine and there has been no issues whatsoever. Stick with stripper clips and get good with them.

I would say stick with the one that has the original 10 round fixed mag. The only other way would be if the detachable mag is made by tapco. I have heard that others like them and they are fairly reliable. Or if it is a sks d or m model. Those take ak mags.
