I'm thinking about getting an SKS for a fun gun/truck gun. Although the standard 10-round fixed mag should be alright for most situations, I'd like to be ready for the rioting Democrat mutant zombie UN bears that may come out November 3rd..... ;)

My father has a Chinese SKS w/ a 30-rounder attached, but his seems to have a few more feeding problems than I prefer. Also, shooting prone is pretty much out of the question.

So, does anyone make a fixed, 20-rd mag for the SKS that works reliably? :scrutiny:

Thanks in advance... :D

The 10-rd mag the rifle came with is the BEST choice.
Practice fast tactical reloads with stripper clips.
It's better than a 20-rd JAM...

...at least, that's what I think!
Good Luck.:)

In a word....no
Well, for the most part no. It is very difficult to find a working 20 or 30 rounder for the SKS. Sometimes you can tweak them just right but it is a lot of trial and and error.

The other problem is the act of removing and inserting another mag. It can be a slow process. Some of the mags will not lock the bolt back. THe bolt has to be locked back in order to remove or insert the mag.

Believe it or not, with some practice, you can make faster reloads with stripper clips then changing mags. It was how the rifle was designed to be used.

Another problem is a legal issue. The rifle must be a pre-ban ( in country before '89) to be legal to use detachable mags. You can find a lot of info and specifics about this at the SKS forums. Search for "detachable magazines" and you will have plenty to read.

My brother has a detachable one that works, but it is also a PITA. It will work just fine with all twenty rounds and not jam. After that you get into the fun. It doesn't want to come out when you try to remove it. He used it as a non-detachable mag for awhile but then went back to the original mag. IIRC, there is a nondetachable chinese 20 round mag out there somewhere that looks like the original mag but bigger. They might be OK.

I have one. It's really roughly made in comparison to the 10 round fixed magazine, and I've never been able to get it to fit the gun. Caveat Emptor.

I've played around with some 20s and 30s, both USA and Chinese made. I was actually able to get them working OK for a while, but they would act up again in short order.

Everyone who's been there always suggests this: Get a SAR1 AK or similar. It's a much better rifle for what you want and not much more expensive in the long run. Plus it's more compact.

Another option would be to find one of the Chinese SKS varients that takes AK mags, but they are hard to find and more expensive than a low cost AK.

I got a 20 round fixed chicom mag I was gonna try on my brothers SKS....

IT used to always jam up with the detacheable 40 round mags he has for it. That was with laquered wolf ammo. SInce Wolf started using Polymer to coat there cases, malfunctions have been on the down low and the mags seem to work just fine. Only a few mal functions compared to it used to be every mag!

He's happy with it so I threw it in my gunsafe. PM me if your interested, I was gonna get a para trooper and try fitting it.

Point of clarification....

I'm asking about the FIXED, NON-REMOVABLE 20-rd. mags. I've already seen the detachable ones, and I wouldn't have one if you gave it to me free. If I need a detachable mag 7.62x39, I'll buy an AK.

KK: I'll consider it, but good luck looking for that paratrooper model. Will your mag only work on the Chinese SKS, or will it work on other models, too?

you'd have to look around, I can't tell you.

my brothers is a norinco and I heard it worked on those. I am not sure if it works on the european examples.

Used to belong to an SKS board... Don't remember the URL though

Ah, I missed the "fixed" part. I've tried those fixed twenties also. I bought one and later got another included with a traded rifle. Both were chinese with the star on the side. Neither worked reliably. In fact, they were worse than the removable mags. I tried on a Yugo and Norinco, possibly a Romanian also.

Fixed or detachable, it's a crap-shoot. Some people just slap them in and viola! It works. Some people file a little here, buff a little there, and the mags work. Others just can't make 'em work.
