Hey all,
Been keeping an eye open for years now , I see Rossi 92s all over the place but one chambered in 454 casull has been illusive . Tried to order one, no availability. Just figured maybe one day I'll happen upon one by luck. Today was the day, wandered into a local shop and they had several Rossi rifles on display. Most were 357 mag with a couple 44s mixed in and then I noticed a lone 454 casull. I was pretty excited but then I saw the price - $925.

I expected that but it got me at a loss because I'm only allowed (by my wife) to buy one gun per year and well... It's August and that purchase was already done as usual in January .

I could easily sell some guns to get it, no problem but there's not much I want to get rid of.

Here's the dilema, if these remain tough to find I may regret not getting it while I can. On the other hand if they're becoming more common I wouldn't mind waiting until winter to pick one up without selling something else. So I'm looking for feedback if you guys have been seeing these out in the wild lately or if I need to go get it while I can.

If they've been more available I'll just wait but if I was lucky to see it on the shelf I feel like it's a rifle I really want but I'd have to say goodbye to some others which isn't a good feeling.

Help me out folks, what would you do?

It's a tough one and almost impossible to answer.

Kinda depends on...

* How bad do you want a .454C lever?
* How much do you actually plan to shoot it?
* How long have you been waiting?
* How much more time do you think you have left to wait?
* What would you have to sell to get it?
* How bad would you miss what you sold?
* Would you consider using a FFL transfer instead of waiting to run into it locally?

These rifles seem to have been made of unobtainium, but now the website makes it sound like they're planning on making at least a few. Do you believe them? How long do you think it would take to run into another one?

Myself - I'd probably pass, just because I feel that .454C is a bit much to ask of that particular action of levergun. I vaguely recall hearing of problems over time in earlier iterations. That being said $925 is probably quite reasonable in today's market. Just about any centerfire levergun is at least $700 after tax anymore.

I agree w/ the 45 Colt sentiment. It'll do anything I want it to. But having that hankering for a specific firearm.......... If I find one I want I just buy it if the price is reasonable for me. Never know when you'll see another one. Ruger No 1 in 7.62x39 I paid too much for but am not sorry I bought it. Marlin 1895 Cowboy back in the day. I waited on getting the 16" 92 in 357. One finally showed up at a price I was willing to pay. Who knows what the availability of 454 will be. Decision you have to make.

As I understand it they are turning out new 454s, where as they weren't for a few years. My ffl buddy could get rhe Citadel version not too long ago and both Citadel and regular Rossi in other chamberings are available atm. Ill ask him about them currently

I do want to say that I have a .45-70 that I don't plan on shooting much. The 3 or 4 boxes of ammo I have laying around are likely a lifetime supply for me.

I have it mostly just 'cause I wanted it.
Just wanted something with that kind of horsepower.
And that's just fine.

So even if you're just getting this .454C to have and admire, that's plenty reason enough. And if you really want it, I hope it can come to be for you.

I'm already invested pretty deep in 454 casull and I handload
The 454 is just a 45 colt you don't need to hot rod or have over pressure loads around. 454 is better for me

Just spoke to my FFL buddy and it appears they are all gone again. he did remind me that it was actually almost a year ago we were talking about them......ill admit i completely forgot

You are in a dilemma that most, if not all, of us married gun guys find ourselves in far too often; “My spouse puts limits on my hobby, but I HAVE to buy the unicorn there in the gun store rack or it’s gone!”

You know the drill, it’s either, “Buy it and ask for forgiveness,” pass on it and hope it doesn’t sell or another pops up after Jan 1, or sell a gun or two so the purchase is a financial push. Only you can make that decision… but here at Enablers Unanimous, we would love to hear about your new .454 😇

As for the Rossi ‘92, I really like mine in .45 Colt. It’s my favorite pistol caliber rifle, so I very get your attraction to the .454. Add in the fact that they are few and far between, and I feel for you.

Whatever path you choose, good luck! 👍👍

Stay safe.

I paid more than that for mine, two years ago but it was still NIB. There are some important differences between the .454 and standard .45Colt guns. The standard guns are now around $600, so not the bargain they used to be. The .45's can be loaded to 50,000psi so strength is not an issue. However, cartridge overall length would be an issue with heavier bullets. I shot a handful of 360gr loads through mine, so it will feed anything. The .454 also has a slightly faster standard twist.

I would sell something to get it. I have a few firearms and a few non-firearm items I would be willing to part with if one of those came up local to me.

Another option but the store will have to play ball. Layaway until January.

If you’ve really been looking for years… I’d buy the gun and decide after I own it whether it’s better to sneak it home, part with something I’ll be able to replace easily enough in January, or beg a special indulgence on account of rarity.

I’m pretty good about checking in almost daily on a highly trafficked internet gun site and local gun shows. Also when traveling the intermountain west I seek out LGS’s to peruse.

While I’m not looking for a lever 454 I do check all levers in general because that’s my primary interest.

I’ve seen exactly ZERO in the last 3-5 years of the gun the OP is asking about.

I can tell you the shop I found this one if you'd like , maybe they got a source.

Thanks for the feedback, reassures me I chose wisely to just get the thing while I can

Thanks for the offer Obturation. However, I'm not looking for a 454 lever rifle. It's almost a daily battle of wills around the Frulk estate to keep the on-hand caliber selection from expanding. A few years ago I banished the 9mm in an effort to scale back on what I needed to stock for. Nothing against the 9... just that I have .40's I can shoot just as well so I decided to commit to them.

Then, early this year one I banished came crawling back home. I'm weak like that. God help me if I let a .454 through the door, it would probably start a flood of new calibers.

I will say we've (the extended family on THR) discussed the lack of availability of the Rossi in .454 a few times in different threads. Everyone agreed they are scarce. You did good to make the move and adopt this one even if it wasn't the right time for you.

A lever .454 Casull is a FORMIDABLE firearm.

Put it on lay away and do not finish the payments until next year, if the shop will allow. See if your wife is willing to let you buy next years gun now. So promise no purchases next year. I like the leave with empty gun case and come back with a full one. Buy it now and store it at a friends place. Just have to figure if your up front about it or not. The next part is easy.

The Rossi is secured on lay away and I planned to sell a rifle to accodate the purchase . the sale fell through so I'm going to list the martini on here so if anyone wants to take a look I'll be posting it later.

If you can ride layaway for until January, you are golden.
I find that having my own account and an agreed upon amount or revenue source to feed it keeps marriage much more simple. I don’t have to ask. I don’t have to justify. She doesn’t ask either. If I mess around and take from family funds, that’s a different story. I give this advice to young couples who want to get married (my job involves this sometimes). The ones that take that advice are still married. Most of those who did not are divorced.

I haven't had any interest in the martini on here so I brought it to a local shop and the owner really liked it but had no clue what to offer. I ended up selling them one of my beloved revolvers, that hurt a little but the rossi will be coming home in the next day or 2. I'll show it here when I get it here. Ouch. Martini will stay posted one more week and if I don't get any hits I'll store it back away in the safe.

Got the rossi home!
It's nicer than I expected, action is remarkably smooth and trigger is excellent. Wood is better than I have seen on most, it's a little squared off but has a darker color and some figuring . Overall very happy, can't find anything to complain about at this point. Fit and finish is almost as good as my Henry . I'll see how it shoots in a few weeks.
