Hello, here's the deal. I have been bit by the bug and I NEED one bad!! I live in Arkansas so no real chance of bear attacks. I am deciding between the Guide gun and the 1895 with the 22 inch barrel. Here is my question. Will I lose a lot with the shorter barrel? Will the longer barreled version, not the guide gun handle the same stout rounds? And just to throw something else into the mix today I saw a 1895c with an octagonal barrel,very little if any use for $525. is that a good deal? I have no real need for a 45-70, just always wanted one and I might deer hunt with it. I do reload so that will be easy. I just mainly want to know which to go with and any differences besides barrel length. I wanna buy it tomorrow, forgot to mention that. Thanks

I have an 1895. Way fun to shoot. I use 50.0 of Varget under a Speer 405 (load from the Hodgden pamphlet). Lots of whack on the front end, but suprisingly moderate recoil (I do have a Decelerator pad)
In Pet Loads, Ken Waters says the 1895 is one of the strongest 45-70's there is, and would be his first choice. Light, quick handling, and fun to shoot.
According to the Blue Book, they only made that one year. List price was $995. Shown at $700 in 98% and $475 in 95% condition. I don't think you'd get hurt at all. I'd walk in with $450 in 100's and 50's and lay it down . Worst he can do is say no, but I'll bet you get his attention. In any case, I think it'd be mine tomorrow nite.
And, if we just bought guns we "needed" instead of "wanted", our guns safes wouldn't be full.
There's LOTS of 45-70 fans here. Let us know how it turns out.

Well, my main advice would be to avoid a ported gun. I think most Guide Guns were ported though not all. Very very loud.

This is a bug I've had for nigh on to 5 years, now. Funny thing is, I don't need an old one. I just want a non-ported short-barreled '95. Even niftier (traditionalists, please cover your eyes!), would be if it were stainless!
As I live in TX (the land of the 120 lb "monster bucks"), there's absolutely no reason to need it, but I do have a serious case of the "want some"s.
But, as with so many itches, I've other priorities that I need to address, first.

Ed, if you are in NE AR I can arrange for you to take a non ported standard type .45-70 Marlin Lever Gun out for a "test drive." Let me know if you are interested.
If you plan to scope the rifle then the shorter barrel won't hurt you.
If you plan to use iron sights the decreased sight radius may decrease accuracy somewhat.
The 45-70 is a bit odd in that decreasing the barrel length results in very little velocity loss (until you start getting REALLY short.)
Pick what looks best to you. The practical differences are small.
All Guide guns were ported until about a year ago when Marlin switched over to non-ported. Since the switchover was not too long ago, both types should be available. In addition, I have seen a couple of stainless models--very nice.
If you go with the CB, you might keep in mind that it was designed for the Cowboy Action Shooting folks who don't generally push the upper limits of power on their ammo. The action is identical to the other 1895 guns, but I don't know how well that looooong magazine full of 8 or 9 rounds of 45-70 will stand up to the really heavy recoiling 45-70+P loads available.
I've heard of a few folks who are doing it with no problems, but if you read Randy Garrett's Website, he mentions that he considers the tubular magazine to be a weak point in the typical lever action rifle design.

The .45-70 is cool, no question. But I still am not convinced that the ported models are all that loud. As a shooter, I've never thought it was any louder than an A-Bolt or a 700 in .30-06. Others said maybe that's true for the shooter, but the "people next to you" will notice the difference. So, okay, I couldn't discount that possibility. Then I took my wife to an indoor range where I shot a few rifles, and according to her, no one paid any attention when I shot the .45-70, but when I switched to the .30-06s everyone stopped and checked out what I was shooting. Now, she married me so her judgment is open to question, but I'm still not sure the ported .45-70 doesn't get a bad rap for loudness. I KNOW the .45-70 gets a bad rap for kicking too hard (at least with regular factory ammo).

Well, I don't know about the 30-06 but other than an AR the loudest rifle I own is a 700 ADL in 270 with a 22" barrel. With the 130 Gr loads my buddy makes up for me, it is plenty loud. but still not as loud as another friends ported Guide Gun.
