I'm thinking of purchasing a new Ruger Blackhawk convertable in 45 ACP / 45 LC. Asking price at my local store is $415. What's your opinion of the gun and price?

I've been considering one of those as well. Thought I might try one with the 4 & 5/8" bbl. The price sounds pretty good and I think it's about in line with what my dealer quoted me. As soon as I get one more S&W 45ACP revolver I'll probably get the Ruger. Doubt that I'll ever shoot anything but ACP in it but as a handloader the 45 Colt cylinder might get some wear and tear after all.

Not a bad price at all today. But... the revolver is possessed. I had three evil-bottom-feeders in .45 ACP when that new 5.5" BH came home - my first ever revolver - supposedly to shoot up my stash of ball ammo. One day, I bought a box of cowboy .45 Colts - oops! More .45 Colt round guns appeared - the bottom-feeders left. My first DA was a 7.5" .454 SRH - then a .45 Colt 625MG. One day - 4.5yr ago - I counted my bags of empty .45 Colt cases - and bought a Dillon 550 set up for same. Bad move - another hobby!

It was all traced back to the .45 conv BH. I told you, they are evil!

Can't help you with the price because they have risen considerably in my area and haven't been out much lately, but I can tell you the Ruger .45 Blackhawk convertable is one of my favorite handguns.

Sounds like a good price. I hardly ever use my acp cyl. in my conv., but I just like the idea of having it. I have 2 P90s and a Norinco for my acp shooting. My opinion of Blackhawks is very very high. One thing to check though, make sure the cylinder chamber mouths are at least .450. Even better if they are .451 or .452. Overall acurrcy can suffer if they are to tight, in my experience. Old 112

Had a conv .45 BH purchased around '72; sold it in '84 cause we were needing the funds. Wish I hadn't! Currently have conv old model vaquero in the .45 duo that is dead on with either cylinder at social distances. It is my favorite gun to shoot. as well as seeing occasional duty in as car gun, the regular nightstand gun, and, rarely, a carry gun.

Mine's a 45/8" that I've had for about 15 years. It's spent most of that as my truck gun. Accurate, potent and easy to use. Seem's to like the acp as much as 45 colt ammo. I think it's a keeper. Seems like it was $260.00 back then.

Accurate, deadly, dependable!

A good reason to have a convertable is you can test your .45 ACP reloads. If they stick, you made a mistake. You cant test this with a semiauto.

I bought one a few years ago and it still amazes me how accurate it is. It was great out of the box, but with an oversized base pin it's even better.

I didn't start reloading until after my conv was gone. It saw mainly UMC brass-cased ball ammo. They do headspace by stopping the rim's forward progress with the chamber's rim step, making the headspace a variable if you reload range sweepings brass without length-sizing. Not a problem for me then, as I had that stash of new brass. Sadly, range-sweepings in .45 ACP are generally not good for the revolvers. My 625's have 'enjoyed' new Starline brass, and no more problems, for some time. I have yet to have to discard one from too many times through the press.

One problem I did experience with my early 625 .45 ACP reloads was that occasional errant round that just wouldn't fit all of the way. Lee makes a separate crimper with a carbide re-sizing insert - problem solved!

Sounds like a decent price to me. I picked up a 5-1/2" blued .45 convertable some years back, my first six gun and still one of my favorites!

$415 is a great price. My rule of thumb for Ruger street prices is 80% of list. List on this revolver is $565, and 80% is $452.

I love my 4 5/8" 45 Convertible. You're gonna want some gun leather too, with a cartridge belt. The first time you shoot full power 45 acp back to back with full power 45 Colt (neither +P) you will be amazed at the difference. The Colt Puts the ACP to shame.

. . . just a minute . . . have to buckle on my rig . . .

Ah, that's better. Where was I?

Oh yes, 45 Colt has some wonderful power. IMHO just right for a sidearm. Recoil is a revelation, and you begin to wonder why firearm makers got away from it. Accuracy is wonderful. The click of the hammer as you pull it back is addictive.

By all means, buy it. You'll love it.

Tell us more, Gaz. I've never shot .45 Colt but I do have a 45ACP S&W. I've had my eye on a S&W Mountain Gun in 45 Colt for awhile...
