I am thinking about getting one of these for CCW. Does anyone have any opinions of them. Are they OK for +P ammo? I don't really know much about them but I found one for what seems like a decent deal.
Any model 64 is ok with +P ammo. They are the stainless steel version of the model 10 (military and police revolver in production since 1899). If you forced me to have only one handgun it would be among the top contenders. With a 3" barrel the 64 is a do it all gun, great for belt carry, IWB, home defense and range. They were/are produced with 2" and 4" barrels. In a 3" or 4" gun I'd use the 158 grain lead hollow point semi-wadcutter +P by Remington or Winchester.
I carried a 4" 64 for 2 years with Wells Fargo Armored Service Corp - never felt underarmed with it, stuffed with HydrShoks - which got me introuble more than once, as company policy was 158gr LRN widowmakers.
I even won a pre-IDPA match with it, out of a duty rig. Ticked off many people that day. Get one, buy speedloaders, and practice - good solid gun that will defend you and yours well.
Great guns and can be loaded with some great +p 158 gr HPLSWC makes for a great gun. They were made with 2", 3", 4", bull and 4" pencil barrels. There is a 4" pencil barreled one near me, or was. I have a 4" pencil barrel that was taken off square butt gun and I would like to find a 65-2 or a 64-2 Pinned round butt gun to put it on for what I would like to have as my version of a Mt Gun.
Oh yeah, I am thinking I might CCW mine too. I have a Hoffner's Miurage IWB for it, and am (as evidenced by my Gen. and Rev. posts) looking into my carry belt and CCW grips issues on my Model 64....
Being a stainless M10, a very fine and underappreciated (and undervalued) gun.
I would prefer a M64 with 158 gr SWCHPs over a lot of the fashionable autojammers. My personal portfolio gets increasingly weighted towards boring, reliable wheelguns every year.
Excellent revolver that will eat the +P loads all day long without a glitch! Fixed sights should have been set for 158 grain loads but you may need to adj. load weight to shoot to point of aim. Not saying this is a drawback because at least 80% of the fixed sight S&W's I have owned have shot to point of aim.
My 4" 64 HB was my duty revolver. It is the most accurate fixed-sighted firearm I've ever shot or owned.I have carried it off duty very successfully. It is the firearm that I'll never get rid of.tom.
I just ran 350 rounds through my DPD Model 64 this morning without a hitch. I was mostly shooting steel plates at 35 and 50 yards. It's a great gun, fixed sights do not hinder this gun one bit!
I also took my model 67 (no dash), but couldn't hit a darned thing. I rested both guns for a group at 30 yards, and the 64 did the best @ 1.89 inches.
Many years ago I bought a police trade-in Smith&Wesson Model 64 at a gun show for $200 and it has served as my primary home defense gun on numerous occasions. It's a reliable, straight shooter and I wouldn't hesitate to bet my life on it.
