Hi guys,

2 things:

1. Does anybody know of a self-defense shooting that happened the same day of the VT incident. Doesn't have to necessarily be by a CCW'er, could be a home-defense thing that happened.... and it could be anywhere in the US.

2. Did anybody here happen to go to the range the same day as the VT incident, and if so, if you remember what you shot that day and at what range it would be great.

This is just for the into of something new I'm working on. A separate little op-ed style piece I'm writing. If you went shooting that day, and feel comfortable with me using your story, it would be great.

Basically I want to mention the VT incident, then say, "on the same day _________ used a firearm to protect himself/herself from _________, a criminal who __________ attempted to _________, and elsewhere on that same day __________ went to __________ shooting range where he/she recreationally shot at paper targets to enjoy his/her day off from work.

Or something like that, and then launch into what all of them have in common, which is obviously firearms...... and then talk about gun-control issues.

While I could make up names and events, I'd love to use real stories that actually happened. If you feel comfortable with me using your name (or just last name) that would be great. If not I can just say "a man in Wisconsin" or something.

Thanks. It's just an intro statement. Nothing of particular substance. I just want to highlight that on the day of VT, guns weren't only used to kill people as that's obviously not what guns do - it's the actions of the people behind them.

Nothing specific, other than "x Million gun owners did NOT go mental and start shooting up a school or mall".

These stories, all dated April 16, 2007 (the day of the VT shootings), were all recovered from The Civilian Gun Self-defense Blog at http://claytoncramer.com/gundefenseblog/blogger.html. It is necessary to scroll down below the advertisements to get to the stories

Robbery suspect healing after victim shot him, police say

Craig Adams picked the wrong man to rob, police said. The proof was a 9mm bullet lodged in his stomach from his own gun.

About 4:30 a.m. on April 8, a hooded Adams allegedly walked up to Lynn Brown, 28, who was pumping gas at the Chevron gas station at 1000 West Blue Heron Blvd. According to a police report, Brown said, "What's up," but became concerned when Adams didn't answer.

Police said Adams, who turned 24 in county jail Saturday, then pointed a stolen 9 mm at Brown and said, "You know what time it is."

Brown grabbed the slide portion of the semiautomatic gun and the two struggled. The gas station clerk called 911 to report the fight. Adams, standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 175 pounds, fought with Brown, who is about the same size, and at one point slammed him against the car, police said.

But Brown didn't let go of the gun,and a round was fired into Adams' stomach, police said. Adams ran from the gas station with his hands up. Brown dropped the gun and ran to his car to get his .45 caliber, for which he has a valid license, police said. He called police, then waited to see whether Adams would return with friends, he told police.

"Even though I'm happy for the victim, he played a real dangerous role in this," Detective Sgt. Patrick Galligan said. "The best thing to do is give the money. But I've got to applaud the gentleman."

Galligan said people should get a good description of a suspect and the license tag number of the suspect's car and leave the rest up to police. Brown declined to be interviewed, saying through a friend that he feared retaliation. Both Brown and Adams are from Riviera Beach.

Police sent out an alert to other police departments to search local hospitals for someone matching the suspect's description. Just after 5 a.m., Atlantis police called Riviera Beach police to say they may have found the suspect at JFK Medical Center.

Adams was later taken by medical personnel to Delray Medical Center for surgery.

At JFK Medical Center, Riviera Beach detectives interviewed the three people who had brought Adams to the hospital: Tera Bradley, 21, Brittany Hightower, 20, and Jordan Lameille, 22. Their stories were inconsistent, police said, but they all said Adams had been shot in a gas station west of Lantana, not Riviera Beach.

Brown identified Adams -- who pleaded guilty to grand theft auto in 2005 -- through a photo lineup. The struggle was caught on surveillance camera at the gas station, police said.

Adams was charged with attempted robbery with a firearm, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, committing a felony with a firearm and grand theft of a firearm.

After undergoing surgery, Adams was booked into the hospital wing of the county jail Wednesday and held without bail. He was scheduled to have his first appearance before a judge today.

You might also want to search the NRA-ILA Web site for The Armed Citizen civilian use of a firearm for self defense. They have stories posted there all the time. http://www.nraila.org/ArmedCitizen/

I thought to look there (the NRA-ILA site), but wasn't sure if you could search by specific date. I've read stories there before.

Thanks a lot! :)

Now all I need is somebody to volunteer their recreational shooting experience that day if they went to the range. Again, I just want to remind you guys that I'm happy to quote you as "a man in (your state)" or if you're a woman, obviously I'd substitute words.

And one more if possible. If anybody happened to buy a gun that same day by chance, and would be willing to volunteer their general location, and the model gun they bought, that would be fantastic (if you bought a Glock 19 or Walther P22, that would be fantastic - but any gun will work for the example).

Again, I can probably make up something, but I'd hate to do that as it's no better than what the antis do. I feel it's important for things to be truthful.

Don't this personal, but I think it's a bad idea.

Some years ago our Hunter Education group was approached by the Local ABC-TV affiliate to film our training program. Unfortunately the Jonesboro school shootings had occured the day before. The TV reporter let it slip that ABC-NEWS was encouraging their local stations to get coverage, thus linking our program with a crime story. We declined the interview and told them we would gladly do a piece on Hunter Education at a later time, but felt the timing and linking this crime to our efforts did a disservice to the Hunting community.

Ask yourself this...."Do we have more to gain, or more to loose?" by linking the good actions with that of a horrendous crime spree.

I think that Rembrandt has a valid argument.

That being said, I would like to add that there are many incidents of firearms related self-defense that occur every single day! I strongly urge members here to read The Civilian Gun Self-defense Blog daily. They post stories of gun related self-defense every day citing newspaper sources and even post followup stories when they find them.

There is also a "chap" in Australia named Jon Jay Ray that tracks such incidents (almost all in the U.S. but occasionally in other countries) and posts them on Gun Watch blog (with a mirror site here) also on a daily basis. He often times gets into the political overtones of the use of guns, but he is stead-fast PRO-gun especially since Australia's narrow-minded banning of them.

it's not linking the good and the bad. It's creating a dichotomy. Quite the opposite.
