Anyone have any recommendations for a good powder measure for charges up to 170 grains? I was looking at the Lyman #55, but the new ones are getting some pretty bad reviews.

I know the chargemaster throws from 2 to 300 grains, but its a bit pricey.

If you are charging 170gr per shot however, thats prolly not one of your concerns :)

Not a bad choice considering it has a scale built in. However it's a little slower than I would like.

Average dispensing time of 60 grains of extruded powder is 30 seconds

Don't really want to wait over a minute to charge each case.

Especially with 170 grain powder charges !

If you want it to dump 170 grains at a time, I think my neighbor has a coal chute she doesn't use anymore :)

With a 170gr charge, though, you could be off by 10% and that's roughly a whole .44 Magnum charge.

What the heck are you loading?

I'm currently loading over 120 grains in my 460 Weatherby and have to do it in two throws which isn't as accurate as I would like. Also having a 600 Overkill built and it will take up to 170 grains to load.

I'd go cheap and use a tablespoon or something and hand trickle the rest. you can't be reloading something that large in vast quantities right?

1. A B&M with an after-market drop tube would work.
2. A call to the designer of the Quick-Measure will get you one of his powder measures and a tube big enough to charge any case.

The Smartreloader ISD can be adjusted to drop most of the charge quickly then trickel the last little bit.

I'm still using a Lyman #55 that I bought in the early 70s, don't know why they would be getting bad reviews.

Lyman in the last ten years bears no resemblance to the Lyman of the 1970's.

Their quality has gone down the rathole. I've had to send more stuff back to Lyman for repair than all other equipment vendors combined. I'll never buy anything else from Lyman.

I think hornady makes one for the 50 bmg that might be in your range.

Yeah, I was looking at that. It's confusing as to what measure comes with what parts. You have to change metering inserts to get different load ranges. I don't know if the 50 measure drops between 80 and 265 or between 165 and 265. It might be better to get the standard measure and the 50 conversion kit.

I collect powder measures, I would determine which measure would drop 85 grains, then do it twice and check, I collect scales, I could use an old Redding with 30 W oil then check again with an old Pacific, the Pacific does not have graduations, only zero, weight is off set with counter weight.
