I'm looking for an inexpensive but decent quality scope for a Remington 597 (22) rifle...any suggestions?

I put a 4x32 BSA on my .22. For $20 at Walmart it has very clear glass with a bright picture. Very happy with it.

I can't say enough about my Nikon ProStaff fixed 4X. You can get them for a little over a hundred dollars. Essex

No matter what scope you use, many will do fine, get the weaver rail mount and appropriate rings. The weaver rail has a low profile and if not useing the scope you can still use the irons without removing the rail.

one more question: do i need a scope mount, or can't i just mount directly on the rifle?

The 597 has a grooved receiver for mounting a scope with tip-off rings. Check the eye-relief on whatever scope you buy. I have a Simmons 2-9x32 AO on tip-offs mounted on mine, and it seems that I just barely can't get enough eye relief when the scope is at it's higher power.

I have a Bushnell 3-9x32 on mine, and I just mounted the rings directly to the receiver.

It works great. No need to spend a bunch on it; I think I paid $30 for mine.

thanks guys...it seems there are some decent options in the $30-$50 range. i don't need anything fancy at all, just something that works fairly well for fun shooting

scope rail

Putting this scope rail on will give you many more options as far as ring selection goes, and the weaver rings are a better fit to the rifle than the dovetail mounts.

I have one of those cheap little Simmons 4-7 x 30 (?) on my .22. I would recommend putting that scope on, then replacing the 597 with a Marlin Mod. 60. :D

I put a cheapie Tasco Pronghorn 3-9x32mm riflescope on a M597 using Bushnell 76-3022 rings...

I've been very happy with that setup...

I put a Tasco MAG-IV 4-16x40mmAO riflescope on a M597M (.22WMR) also using the Bushnell 76-3022 rings...

I've been very happy with that setup, too...

The Tasco MAG-IV scope is no lightweight, yet the Bushnell rings have held up well. If you beat up your rig a lot, you might want to go with something a little more substantial if using a large/heavy scope...
