In September I purchased a <20 rounds from new Remington 1100, 28" barrel, modified Rem choke with synthetic stock and it's been just sitting there starin' at me :scrutiny: . What can I use the gun for? Can I use it for trap, skeet or sporting clays in it's current set up? What's a good source for choke tubes, accessories, etc.? I'm a scattergun newbie so any advice would be helpful.
Thanks in advance,
bigjoe

Bigjoe,

Short answer to your question YES.

Your 1100(12ga, I presume) is one of the most vesitile shotgun set-ups around. Since you are new to shotgunning I would go shoot some Sporting Clays, Skeet and Trap with it then worry about adding to it. Let the gun and game tell you what you need.

My sugestion for sporting clays is put in the Imp Cyl choke and forget it(other than cleaning) for a while. After a few laps around the SC courses you can start swaping chokes.

After you put a few hunderd rounds through it and get used to it, I think you will really enjoy that shotgun.

Good luck

You can do Any and Everything with that gun.

New to shotguns? Brister's Book Shotgunning: The Art and the Science is a great way to read up. Even tho and older publication, still chocked full of information and answers questions for new and old shooters alike. Try www.abebooks.com.

Since you have the CC out...check with NuLine, and Carlson Chokes. Sorry don't have links handy, but I prefer the external knurled ones...hate keeping up with darn wrenches. :p

Visit a Range, or invite yourself with a shotgunner. Heck - sing out and a member aorund here will be glad to meet up.

Basics and fundamentals on gun fit, and such, then GET lessons. Easy to spot a willing teacher.

Use the search function here - don't be shy to ask any of us any questions- anytime.

Heck, I just answered about a dozen inquires b/t yesterday and today alone.

Didn't say I knew anything, or had the right answer - just said I replied. :uhoh: :D

Skeet, Trap, Sporting Clays, and most types of bird hunting are all fair game.

With a shorter barrel it'll work for home defense or 3-gun.

I note you're in MD, heh,heh....

So am I. I'll be shooting at PGC Sunday if it's not pouring. Bring that 1100 and get the short version of Shotgun 101.

I also have a few extra Remchokes you can try out at the range.

Bob Bristers book mentioned above is the shotgunners bible. If you can't get to a coach find a copy of the video Sporting Clays put out by Briley. It has Gil Ash and Jerry Meyers. It is a good video to get someone "up to speed" on how to shoot a shotgun and entertaining as well. :)

Watch out Sporting Clays is VERY adictive, at one time I was shooting 2-3 time per week. :what:

Thanks!

Thanks for the responses everyone!

Awaiting my copy of Bob Brister's book.

Dave - what time will you be at the range and what should I bring to feed my Remington? I live in Hyattsville and can come out just about anytime on Sunday!

Thanks,

How does 10 AM sound? Check your PMs, I'll send you my cell number. Look for a grey Cherokee, driven by a grey Cherokee of more than average size and good looks(G) carrying an 870. I'll be someplace around range 7 or 8. I'll wear my MD Division Of Correction hat.

As for ammo, 7 1/2 shot is the largest shot size allowed. Ammo is sold there, so you may want to pick it up on site.

See ya....

When are one you folks meeting up , and receiving a Dave 101 from the man himsef gonna take a video , tape record - or even a series of pics to show the basics?

I'm "still" waiting for a certain book - thought maybe the author might need some models for pics... *ahem * ;)

Update

Mrsbigjoegood1  (who was under the weather by the way) and I met Dave McCracken at the PG County Trap and Skeet Range and boy did he put on a clinic! Even the mrs was impressed with Dave's instruction and how he had me, a scattergun virgin, bustin' clays on my first outing.

Dave's Shotgun 101 taught me the imprortance of a proper stance and follow-through. I was able to bust maybe 15 of the 50 attempted clays with his instruction and after a while he had me doing a little self diagnosis when I missed (i.e. not following through on my shots, not swinging to the left properly).

Dave reviewed the proper safety precautions taking nothing for granted and on my first round, he coached me through. I observed him on the next as he demonstrated some very fine shotgun work. I think he missed 2 clays only to show me how not to do it or so I wouldn't feel so bad. ;) On the next round he asked if I were confident enough to try on my own so I was game and had a decent go of it. There was one point in that round where I busted like 3 or 4 in a row!

The experience redlined my fun meter and I would probably have done a few more rounds if it weren't for the fact that my sick wife, who had me park facing the range so that she could observe from the warmth of the car, was a little worn out.

Anyhow, I received some great instruction from Mr McCracken and will heed his advice - BA/UU/R! I encourage anyone in the DC metro area interested in learning shotgun basics/sports, etc to look up Dave. You will not be disappointed.

Dave has probably forgotten more about shotgunning than I will ever learn but that won't stop me from getting out there and enjoying.

Thank you Dave. I will share my sport!

I am glad to help, Joe and hope the Mrs has recovered. Stay focussed and BA/UU/R, you'll improve markedly with a few more range sessions.

Shotgun 101 works......

Sounds like you guys had a great time. Did you shoot skeet, Trap or Sporting Clays?

Next time you need to wait until the wife is feeling better so she can join the fun as well.
