I have a Taurus 85 Ultralight 5-shot .38 Spl Revolver. It has the standard rubber grips.

I would like to get some grips for it that are smaller, thus making the gun easier to carry in a coat pocket. The rubber has too much friction.

I have a Model 36 S&W .38 Spl as well -- which was purchased in the fifties, is in mint condition and used to belong to my grandfather. I currently have it "out of service". It has very small wooden grips which are just basically side panels on the frame of the grip. The metal part of the grip is visible on the backstrap, bottom of the butt, and inside of the grip. This is exactly what I would like to find for my Taurus Model 85.

I have searched high and low on the internet, but can't seem to find anything like that. If anyone could point me in the right direction, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hogue makes a set of rubber grips that
are smaller than the factory taurus
grips. They leave the back strap exposed
and have finger grooves.

You might find a set of the older wood
grips that used to come on the small
frame revolvers. They too leave the back
strap exposed but have no finger grooves.

I have a set of simulated ivory grips on my small frame Taurus - not sure who made them off hand but they work out well for carry. Small panel type grips are available.

If they have finger grooves, then the front strap would not be exposed.

I would like some grips that leave the gun's metal frame exposed on all sides of the grips --- just the lateral sides covered -- such as on a Smith J frame.

Now - from your post, I know they exist -- but you just said they "are available". That doesn't tell me where to find them. Any hints?

wasn't there a gentleman from Asia here a month or so ago that made some fantastic grips? his prices were great too. I did a search, but I can't recall his SN or anything. anybody remember that guy?

I was going to suggest those, but for the non exposed front strap
I have put them on all of my small Tauri
Used to pick them up out of the junk bins for $5
Numrich has them for $30

That little bit of wood in front makes a big difference in shooting comfort and does not impact on concealbility

I have literally spent hours on the internet looking for some grips for this gun. I am going to make a special trip to a gun show next weekend to see if I can find some - as I still can't find what I want for it.

I did take the grips off of my Model 36 S&W -- and with a little Dremel work, I could probably make them fit -- but I don't know how good it would look - and how good the fit and finish would be.

I don't want to spend over $25 or so -- and I want as minimal grips as possible -- just like what is on my S&W Model 36.

Any more ideas?

bpisler,

You mentioned the Hogue grips are smaller. So the finger grip front portion reduces felt recoil (some claim) or something about the thickness or size of the Hogue model that you mentioned?
