Need some advice on a stock for an old shotgun.

I've got a pre-64 (probably purchased in the early '50's) Winchester Model 37 16ga. shotgun I'm trying to restore. It was my father's first gun, and unfortunately he gave it to my sister's husband, who apparently put it away in the attic and never touched it for about 15 years. (jackass) The gun is pretty much coated with rust.

The good news is that the gun is in my possession now. I took it apart and I'm in the process of cleaning off all the rust and restoring the metal parts. That's going really well. The bad news is that the buttstock of the gun got cracked pretty badly in the process of trying to remove it from the reciever.

So now I'm looking for a replacement stock for a 16ga. Model 37. Can any of you guys offer suggestions on where to start looking, or things to avoid? I honestly have no idea.

They also have Model 37A and 370 parts, and it's very possible the wood interchanges.

Want to hear something scary? I've been scouring eBay looking for a stock for it, but I completely missed that ad (never showed up in my searches) I assume because it doesn't have the word 'shotgun' in it.

I'll watch that ad and see where the price goes, and order from one of the other places if it gets too high. Thanks again!

How did you clean off the rust? I am working on restoring a gun that I found propped against a tree in the woods. Superficial rust, but otherwise fine.

I hear Kroil does wonders on rust.

Truly superficial rust can often be removed by vigorous use of a rough terry rag with Break-free CLP, Bullfrog Rusthunter, or something similar.

It may not be truly superficial as there might be some rust with pitting on the outer surface of the barrel. Thanks for the suggestions.

I removed the rust from this old 37 with a process called 'electrolysis'. Worked amazingly well. Do a Google search with the terms 'electrolysis rust removal' and you'll find some simple instructions for it.
