Need some help...45ACP Load Question

So heres what I'm using:

200gr RNFP Lead
Accurate #5 Powder
CCI Primers

Not looking for anything excessive, but something around 950fps should do

Check your various manuals...If I did it for you, I'd have get up from this computer and walk the full length of my house to the reloading/gun room to look it up in my manuals. Then walk all the way back here and post it...

And to think you even put forth the effort to type a response. The Speer manual I have doesnt list a 200gr RNFP nor does Accurate. Looking for some help from someone who may have used this combination before.

They list a start load of 7.8 gr to 8.7 max for velocity of 902 to 1025 fps with AA#5 & a 200gr Lead laser cast bullet semi wad cutter


That should be plenty close for yours.

Oh Lem'me go look...

My Lyman has two 200 grain lead loads with AA #5...#452460 seated to 1.161". 6.4 grains of AA #5 to 8.0 grains of AA #5.

#452630 seated to 1.235". 7.0 grains of AA #5 to 8.5 grains of AA #5.

You will not likely find a specific "recipe" for a 200 gr RNFP in .45 ACP because that is a revolver/carbine bullet for .45 Colt. You will just have to take published data for SOME 200 grain lead bullet and apply the boring fine print about "starting loads" and "working up".

P.S. Whitey, Welcome to the world of handloading, Mate. I'll go out to The Cave first thing in the morning and try getting you more info as well. I know Walkalong really likes the AA#5 powder so he may post some good ones as well. He actually turned me onto the stuff for 40 S&W and I had great success with it.

When someone comes along and all they say is "do this for me", sometimes they get a little flack and a the "buy a manual, or two" response. That isn't bad advise, by the way.

950 FPS with a 200 Gr SWC and AA #5 should be doable, but I never pushed them that hard. I did load 230 Gr to somewhat duplicate 230 hardball for practice, but it was with W 231.

I need to get the new Lyman #49 manual the folks here that I listen to recommend. I had an older one years back that was full of good info, but I guess I am getting senile as I can not find it.

I have the Accurate "Updated Fifth Edition" load guide (early 90's) and it gives some AA #5 data for 200 Gr lead bullets.

200 Gr Lead - Win LP primer - Firearm - Colt

Start 8.2 Grs for 908 FPS

Max 9.1 Grs for 1020 FPS

Here is some chronograph data I got with 200 grain commercial cast H&G 68 style bullets and 9 grains of AA#5. Cases were WCC Match using CCI 300 primers. When I use Lee 200 SWC's that I cast, velocities run a bit faster.

SIG P220: 919 fps avg

1911A1: 953 fps avg

Usually when I want 950 fps speeds, I use 5.3-5.5 grains of Bullseye depending on which 200 grain cast bullet I'm using, and keep the AA#5 for 230 jacketed slugs.

I checked a few online load data sheets, I've already bought the Speer manual, and I have the Lee book on the way. What others are recommended? I was also thinking the Lyman. In the future, I'll make sure to mention the resources I've already used so as not to come across like "Hey, do this for me". Thanks to all for the help, when I went down to the basement to cook up a few of these, I found the expander (inside the die) was missing. A family member recently gave me the whole setup consisting of a Lee Pro 1000, Lyman 1000 Scale, Lyman 600 Tumbler. The press is missing the primer tray and the bit for the die. So, $6.00 worth of parts is holding me up, but when I do get going I'll start with 7.9 gr and work up from there. Again, thank you for all the help.

FWIW--I have the online AA 3.2.2 and 2004 reloading manuals in their PDF formats. The 3.2.2 manual actually appears to be the later one--i.e., it's the design format of the latest RAMSHOT manual. send me an e-mail if you want a copy.

For handgun shooters, the Lyman P&R Third / latest is well worth having, IMO between that and the Speer 14th, I've generally been happy with the loads I find: you can get a starting load sorted out pretty well.

.45 ACP is a great round to start reloading on. Very easy to get a good load in, low pressure round, tons of data and bullets available, does lead real well, and just plain fun to shoot.
