I am loading IMR 7828 for my daughters .243. Using a 100gr Hornady BTSP. The powder was given to me by a friend and the powder smells normal, looks normal, powder is normal. However, the powder is from 1992.

I just wanted to verify what the load data was back then for this powder. I had settled on a load of 43gr which is giving great accuracy but, there's a small crater showing on the primer. I wanted to verify of the load data was the same as now. 43gr of IMR 7828 is middle of the road in about all my manuals I look through as well as online Hodgdon data.

Thanks in advance.

Cratering can be caused by an over sized firing pin hole in the bolt face. And unless you have cratering, primer flow that extends out to the edges of the primer pocket, and stiff bolt lift, then I wouldn't get to excited about it being a high pressure situation.

K. Definitely had normal looking primers except for the cratering around the firing pin mark.

Just making sure everything is safe for my baby girl is all. :)

I use IMR 7828 in my .243 Win(100 gr & 95 gr) and I am able to use several more grains than what you are loading ... it is safe in my gun, but may not be in yours ...

My main wonder is if the loads for IMR 7828 were lower back in 1992 when this powder came out or if they were about the same as today.

I wish I could help you. I have Lyman's 47th edition which is copyright 1992 and it doesn't list IMR 7828 as a powder for 243. It's really slow for 243.

Sorry bud.

I appreciate it. I'll just keep an eye on it. It's a really accurate load from her rifle. The primer has normal curved edges, doesn't flow. I might tack this up to the way the pin fits the firing pin hole.

It is a really slow powder. I use it in my 7mm RM and it works great on the heavier end bullets for 7mm RM. Works great for the heavier bullets in .243 as well.

IMR 2001 powder guide list 47.0gr as maximum with 100 gr bullets in 243win. Some Rem 700 rifles may produce a cratered primer because of a bevel on the firing pin hole.

My Speer No.11 manual printed 1988 lists their 100 gr. BT with IMR 7828 Max load 45.0 gr., 2873 fps. and minimum 41 gr. at 2551 fps.

2001 IMR Handloader's Guide lists max charge of 47.0 gr as compressed load for 100 gr bullet. Here's the link to a pdf - http://www.castpics.net/LoadData/Freebies/RM/IMR/IMR01.pdf
