Need some information on a Ruger 22/45 Target model pistol.

I have someone offering to sell me a Ruger 22/45 Target model pistol. Slightly used good condition according to the seller. He would like me to price it to him. I need to know:

Is this a reliable pistol, not picky about ammo?

Would it be a good pistol for wife, daughters, daughters-in-law to learn on? I don't want to be clearing jams etc. when we should be shooting.

Where would I find a fair price?

I paid $475 for mine, used, with 6 mags and a RedDot scope. Probably have 4000-5000 through it and really don't think I have any failures. ALL the mags are Ruger though.

Price new, locally, is $269 for 4" barrel; $259 for 5.5" barrel. I've bought two 4" and one 5.5" lately. They're great! You can do a simple modification so that you can "slingshot" the bolt, and a $10 bushing will replace that silly magazine "safety".

Easy to work on and dead-nuts reliable.

My Hunter model is the only gun I can give to a new student and have them walk away with their beautiful target to show their Husband, Wife, or Mom. Ruger's website has a lot of information and videos on takedown.
You can't possibly go wrong.

Well Iload,at least ya found one, I've been looking for at least 6 months, and I haven't found one. Not even in Las Vegas. I'd tell him if it is SS with the cocobolo grips, I'd go $500.00 if blued $400.00 if it is the target model that is. Most of the blued 5" bull barrels are going for $350.00-379.00 new. It is a nice firearm and as was previously stated pretty much trouble free.

The 22/45 has a poly frame. I have the 22/45 Hunter which has the poly frame and SS barrel. Shoots fantastic. I have had very few problems with mine. Started stove piping after nearly 500 rds without cleaning. I know, scold me but it was all in one trip with several shooting it and is not typically fired that much without cleaning. I paid , If memory serves me, around 380.00 NIB about five or six years ago. Should be about that now. If it has the blued barrel and is used I would be looking at the 300.00 range. Prices are a little explosive right now so that may not hold, but that's what I would expect.
You can't go wrong with any of the rugers. Very easy to pick up and get on target.

I picked mine up for under $300 about 3 years ago. Eats anything I feed it. Most accurate pistol I own. It's a good squirrel gun and also served as my wifes HD gun until she adopted my Ruger KP95.

Pain in the butt to Field Strip. Practice would fix that, but hey... with YouTube, all things are possible.

Is it a MK II or MK III era 22/45? The reason I ask is that Ruger added a Loaded Chamber indicator and Magazine Disconnect on the MK III which are unnecessary, lawyer induced modifications, that many don't like. The pistols do seem to function OK with these mods, but there were some problems with them at first. You can also remove both with out too much trouble if you choose to do so. Parts and instruction are available on the net.

The Ruger MK series and the polymer framed 22/45's are some of the better if not best .22 pistols on the market for the money. You can not go wrong. I'd offer $225 if it is in the condition you describe.

I want to get a Ruger 22/45 with the changeable grips other than the new Lite model that I don't want. None of the LGS around here seem to have that but they have plenty with the fixed grips. I have a Mark 1 but I like the grip angle of the 22/45 better.

They're extremely reliable. They're some of the best and most affordable .22lr pistols on the market.

I bought my blued 22/45 w/ removable grips and target sights last summer, price was $319 for the pistol and 200 rounds of CCI Mini Mags at my LGS.

An option if you find one with fixed grips. This guy was on the rimfire central forum selling these sets very reasonably.

The only reliability modification I would suggest is an aftermarket extractor like the one from VQ. It's a great gun and should run reliably with no issues and as long as you don't shoot Remington ammo, you should have no problems. I like federal automatch in mine for plinking. It's my wife's favorite gun.

There are two types of 22/45 frame. One has removable grip panels, the other doesn't.

Our local Turners has a 5.5" bull barrel model without removable grips in their spring flyer for $300.

I have the same model & it eats everything. Stripping is supposedly a pain, but I wouldn't know. I give it a squirt of oil here $ there and an occasional brush & swab through the bore & call it good. Once in awhile I give it a good dousing with Hoppes & hose it out with plastic safe aerosol like Birchwood-Casey.

It has quirks. You can't slingshot it (a mod is available) and you have to hold back the bolt to release it on an empty chamber. Don't do it right & you can damage the bolt release.

All & all I'm very happy with it.
