Living in IL I can only carry when out of state, and the few times that I have I've used a pocket holster for a Ruger LCP. Being a bit thick around the middle, I'm not sure how an IWB holster would fit (do you buy pants that are bigger than you would normally wear?). I was thinking about a holster for my new Ruge SR40c and hoped to get some recommendations.

It depends on how tight you wear your pants. I have some pants that fit comfortably without a holster, and I can wear a holstered 1911 pretty comfortably. I have other pants that are just a little bit tighter, but still comfortable, that make it a tight fit getting a holstered pistol in them.

I think the two best holster materials are either leather or kydex. Lots of guys like the combination of the two in holsters like the Tucker Answer ( http://www.tuckergunleather.com/the-answer-iwb/ ) or Crossbreed Supertuck ( http://www.crossbreedholsters.com/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx ).

For leather you could try Milt Sparks. Their Summer Special/Summer Special II and Versa Max II are two of the industry standards.

For kydex, Garrett Industries has some very nice leather lined kydex.

Another option is the Raven Concealment Phantom. It is a holster that can be worn either IWB or OWB just by changing the attachments. You can also adjust the ride height and cant, so it is very handy for the guy new to carrying so you can try out different options to see what works best for you. In the event you determine you just don't like IWB carry, you still have a perfectly good, concealable OWB holster.

I often see comments on forums about how hard it is for the heavy guys to conceal carry, but I think being a heavy guy is an advantage.

First you are probably larger than the thin guy, front to back, so you have more space to place and hide the pistol. The butt of the pistol is the hardest part of the gun to conceal, and it usually is orientated on the horizontal, so more front to back size is an advantage. The holsters with wide spaced loops , like the Crossbreed and Versa Max II, also work better for the big guys since they have that extra real-estate to place those holsters.

Second, you will generally have more "compressibility" of your body than the thin guy. For instance, a soft spot like a belly (or a well padded hip on heavy guy), can be compressed or moved easier, to allow the presence of a holster and gun, than a boney hip on a skinny guy.

Third, larger baggy clothes that aid in concealment generally look more appropriate on the larger person than on thin person.

I'm far from an being an experienced carrier, (I live in Maryland) but I can carry in some other states with my Utah non-res permit. Anyway, I recently carried my SR9c in an inexpensive nylon holster. It worked very well as far as I'm concerned. You do need a little room in the pants and a patterned shirt helps also. I'm not a big guy; 5'10", 175 lbs. See below. Pictures aren't the best. Taken in a hotel room in Virginia.

I plan to get a better holster after Christmas. No hurry as I won't be able to carry again before then anyway.

I'm more than "a bit" thick around the middle, and I can IWB carry a full size Glock 17 with my norrmal pants. Now, I prefer a "relaxed" fit on my pants to begin with. If yours are snug you may need to upsize.

I find holster choice, especially IWB holster choice, is very personal. I myself am a fan of the "summer special" style IWB holster. This is a molded, rough out, holster with one or two belt straps (I don't care for belt clips) with a reinforced lip for easy reholstering. I find these very comfortable for all day carry.

I believe Milt Sparks originated this style of holster and his are still IMO the best, but he does have a waiting period. If you are in a hurry there are several other companies who make similar holsters (Galco Royal Guard, JBP IWB Concealment Holster, Nelson #92 Summer Special) that are generally much easier to get ahold of.

I really like my crosbreed supertuck. I carry an XD SC 40 during t-shirt weather and usually move up to my XD 45 service model in the cooler months. It is so comfortable that I don't even notice I am carrying a lot of times.

I really like the Remora for my SR9c. At first I thought it felt a little bulky but after giving it some waistband time it’s become my favorite holster. It stays in place and securely holds the gun as advertised and without a clip there is no limit to where or how deep you can carry to find a comfortable position plus it wont break the bank.

I couldn't be happier with my Raven Concealment Vanguard 2. I wear it appendix every day with a Glock 19 and it conceals with everything but very tight t-shirts.

With appendix, I've found I don't have to change pant size like I would with 4 o'clock carry...

Crossbreed Supertuck is a very popular option. I have one for my Xdm and like it. For my Shield I went with a cheapy Desantis Intruder from Midway, and that works well too.

I didn't buy bigger pants, but some do. I just wear my belt one notch looser.

My favorite IWB holster is the Comp-tac CTAC.

I've owned one for 3 or 4 years now for my M&P40. The clips broke after the first couple of years and I had to replace them. But the holster is extremely comfortable.

I just ordered two more. One for a full size 1911 and one for my new Shield.

Old Faithful holsters are the best bang for your buck IMHO

I have one for my P229R and it's great, not as nice as my MTAC but just as comfortable

If your pants are tight enough to stay up without a belt, they will be too tight when you stuff a gun and holster into them. I usually get them one inch larger in the waist than normal. Some slacks have elastic in the waistbands.

That's not entirely true. I carry iwb in pants that are tight enough to stay up on their own without a belt. In fact, I find it fairly easy to carry IWB without going up a waist size provided I don't also wear a spare mag on my belt.
