The P238 and the P938 are both based on the Spanish Star design, as is the Mustang and Colt gov't .380. The safety is of the lift and block type, when you apply the safety it lifts the hammer a tiny it back off the sear, and, at the same time, it blocks the hammer so it cannot fall.
With this safety it cannot fire, period, without the safety being flicked off, and of course there is also the firing pin safety, so your trigger must be pulled back too for it to discharge.

I have a Colt Mustang and SIG P238. Both are great little .380s and while the Mustang has the better trigger the P238 has the better sights.

I think they are very good shooting .320's, probably the best shooting of any of the smaller .380's. But they really are safe in holster carry only cocked and locked. Sig doesn't recomend them as drop safe in the half cocked condition, and the I have several customers who had the safety disengage on it's own in posket carry. So it's a pocket sized gun designed for good holster carry only.

I just got a p238 and waiting to take it to the range next week, I haven't shoot a 380 since i had a war trophy that dad brought home from ww2 so it will be interesting.
