I just brought home a new Ruger SP101. I like the gun. But the edges around the trigger guard are a little on the sharp side.

What is the best/cheapest way to go about rounding off the edge's slightly.

Everybody has their favorites: Smooth cut files, sandpaper, stones, abrasive tips on a Flex-shaft, etc.

Basically, whatever seems to work.

In my opinion, the "safest" method is a basic Dremel tool (or "clone" that takes the same bits) with a cloth or felt polishing wheel and polishing paste on the wheel. This will remove metal in the slowest and most controlled fashion possible. Clean out the leftover grit though; the good news is, since this is a Ruger SP101 you can take it completely apart, which I'd do FIRST.

Basic Dremel kits are usually less than $40. They are so incredibly useful it's just ridiculous. If you don't have one, have your testosterone count checked :D 'cuz every guy needs a Dremel.

(Sidenote on "clones": I personally own a clone (Ryobi). They're fine, unless you're into woodworking, in which case go with the genuine article because there's a "router conversion attachment" that only fits that body. The Ryobi has a bit more power.)

I have a Dremel but it is the ancient model, and I don't have the flex shaft. Sounds like a good excuse to buy a new kit. :)

I have one of those Spyderco sharpeners with the triangular crock sticks so I used one of them to break the sharp edge on the trigger, trigger guard, and the hammer. Just go slow and it works great, no mess to clean up after your done either.

I had same prob., with 101 with hammer. Not so with bobbed hammer model. Anyway for about $2 you can go to a hobby shop and get a flat file used for modeling. Go slow on edges, you won't see the file marks. Be careful if a dremeling you go.

I brought my SP to a gun smith to have the trigger rounded off,it was cutting my trigger finger.I tried a do it yourself job and screwed it up....for $27 I'd take it to a smith you trust.IMO:cool:

I used a Dremmel type tool on mine. Took the edges off the trigger guard (inside & out), trigger and smooth up the serrations on the outside edges of the hammer. Additionally, I smoothed up the edge on that little notch on the top right side of the trigger too. Basically anything I would have finger or thumb contact on while shooting got smoothed out.

As stated previously - go slow. It's real easy for sand paper or abrasive wheels to slip and leave little tracks across your frame.

Dehorning

Since your SP is stainless, you can use whatever you feel like using without having to worry about refinishing. I have a Taurus 85 (also stainless) that I rounded all of the offending corners off using small jeweler's files. The kits of jeweler's files are very cheap and come in all sorts of shapes. I reckon you could also use a round sharpening steel or ceramic or diamond knife sharpening rod to do the job just as well. Just take your time and be neat about it.

I ended up getting some hobby files in a few sizes from the hobby store. After a few trips to the range to "test" the edge after filing I think I got it just right now.

When I first fired the gun the edge of the trigger guard on the right side (I am right handed) cut my trigger finger just before my last joint deep enough to bleed.

thanx for all the tips,... works just great now.
