Last fall I covered my carbine with camo tape. The instructions said the glue would not come off the tape and stick to the gun parts......wrong! It did and now I have a sticky carbine.

What do I need to remove this sticky stuff without harming the finish?

Thanks

Plain old lighter fluid (Naphtha) will take off most tape sticky without harming anything.

Drop it in the dirt. Roll it around a bit. Then it won't be sticky anymore.
It's an AR. Keep babying it and it's going to commit a murder-suicide by exploding in your hands and sending the charging handle into your brainmeats. It's true, I read it on the internet.

rcmodel got it right. Lighter fluid will work, and won't hurt anything. It will make a gooey mess though.

Save some money and get solvent grade VM&P naphtha (same thing, but don't use it in your lighter). About $6 a quart at Lowes or Home Depot.

As mentioned before, try Breakfree CLP. It won't harm paint (if any of the rifle happens to be painted). I'd try that before going to something more aggressive like thinner or naptha.

Try paint thinner (mineral spirits), naptha, even charcoal lighter fluid will work but might need to soak in a bit.

Breakfree PowderBlast IMO is one of the best all-purpose solvents on the planet. Walmart carries it, comes in a black aerosol can. It'll take anything off or out of any other thing. It will mess up some plastics but I use it on my AR all the time with no bad effects. If you haven't ever tried this, you should seriously think about trying it.
