Hey yall. In the near future, as in the next couple of weeks, I will hopefully have 1500 to 2000 large to play with.
I am currently looking into purchasing either an AR-15 or AK of some sort, but need some honest opinions on with route to go. If everything works out the way it is supposed to, I will be going through police academy in April, and will more than likely be exposed to M16s/AR rifles once I get on the street, either being issued one or having to qualify, etc. I am strongly leaning toward an AR, but I have owned and fired an AK before, but am torn on both. If I go with the AR, I was looking @ this one http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct853.aspx from Atlantic Arms, for $649. I do not really care to add any high tech upgrades, but just keep the rifle bare bones besides adding some XS Sights.

My next question, is being that I will be issued a Glock (the agency I will hopefully be hired by carries the G21), should I go with a Glock or since I've had previous experience with the 1911 go with one of those? I have handled and fired the Glock 17, 19, 22, 27, but have yet to purchase one. For what they are, I believe they are extremely well made firearms. I currently own a single-action .357 made by Uberti, which is nice but I would like to update. I also plan on selling a Stoeger Nickel Plated SxS in 12ga, fancy walnut stock along with the .357, as I do not shoot either anymore. I just want to streamline my go firearms. I already have an 870 with 18.5 barrel, so I'm covered in that dept. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I personally have more fun shooting my "newer model" Mini-14 than my AR or AK. The AR would come in close second due to better ergonomics for me over the AK but I wouldn't part with any of them. I'm not a huge fan of the AR you linked because of the 20" heavy barrel, I much prefer a 16 inch "govt contour" or lightweight barrel for my ar's. I have no use for a heavy 223 and my AR comes in at around 6.5 lbs or less which is much better in my opinion but I hunt with mine so others may not mind the added weight or prefer it even.

Glocks are reliable and great guns but I much prefer a 1911 to just about anything. However if you are going to be issued a Glock eventually, why not get a 1911 to have something different around the house? I get the whole streamlined approach to firearms but that can get boring for me.

With $1.5 to $2 million to play with you could buy one of each...of everything...lol.
