I finally ponied up and took my first defensive handgun class yesterday. I've been shooting for several years and carrying concealed for about a year and wanted to step my training up to the next level. In my area its not easy to find this kind of training locally so I'm thankful that Phillip Heck at Neuse River Tactical started giving these sort of classes. The class was a perfect first class for someone wanting to learn more about carrying a concealed weapon. A few of the things I learned were:
1. how to conceal carry a firearm safely
2. how to draw and holster your firearm and drills to practice doing so
3. proper firearm grip and stance
4. moving and shooting
5. shooting from different positions (standing, kneeling, behind cover, urban prone, etc.)
6. firearm malfunctions and magazine changes
7. situational awareness
Phillip is a great guy and his passion for teaching others to be prepared to defend themselves in a stressful situation is evident. He is very willing to help and understanding to each persons level of skill and how to bring them up to the next level. Phillip is also setting up classes where other instructors are brought in for more specialized training in both rifle/carbine and hangun courses.
For anyone in the eastern North Carolina area that is wanting more training I would contact Phillip Heck to find out more about what he has to offer. He is currently a Lenoir County Sheriff and has served in our nations military. He is a very knowledgeable and super friendly person. I am including his contact information below.
