I was asked to work up some loads that replicate Hornady XTP loads by a local business and they gave me factory XTP ammunition to reproduce obviously along with the other components they are going to use (XTP bullets, 242 powder (TG) CCI 500 O.E.M. primers and new NAT brass).

I started with the Hornady 147 XTP factory load and shot #2 from the factory box wound up having an ES from the slowest of 128 fps (only 24 if that one was omitted). Would have thought a chronograph error except it was the only one that went supersonic. Eliminate that one and the SD was only 9.8 fps but that was a shocker for factory ammo, not that I test a lot of it these days.

Fire_Moose is correct, the tolerances on factory loaded ammunition can be much looser than most handloaders would consider acceptable. For most handloaders, the purpose of handloading is not to replicate factory loads, but to improve upon them or make something the factory doesn't.

+1 to what hdwhit said! And I add, we do it usually at a reduced cost than the factory ammo price (or at least that's what we tell our spouse!).

What's the point of replicating factory loads?

They are expanding their line and using Hornady projectiles, I assume they figure they will sell better if they are the same as the Hornady XTP line.
