Never Mix Powders

IIRC Dick Casull used triplex loads to get the velocity/ft lbs from the 454. I remember duplex charges for BP loads in the Lyman manuals for 45/70 but that's it in that dept.

Duplex and triplex loads are not the same as mixing powders, and need to be left for the experienced handloader.

I did an experiment a couple of years ago with equal amounts of AA #5 and HS-6. I mixed it thoroughly and used starting AA #5 data, as it is supposed to be a little faster.

The velocities I got were eye opening.

Like the line from Smokey & the Bandit, "Oh, you can think about it, but dooon't do it".

Clean the powder measure out as well as you can, but if you miss one flake or two isn't going to hurt anything.
.

Keep in mind that smokeless powders are essentially dynamites. The proportion of NG determines velocity and the NC provides the heat. Even a couple of flakes of a high velocity powder could result in a large reservoir of heat from it's NC heavy neighbors and create a pressure spike.

Keep in mind, propellents are still explosive. When in doubt, don't!

This is the Hodgeon powder burn rate chart. It list 145 powders from fastest to slowest. I have 1 lb of NORMA R1 and 1 lb of VihtaVuori 20N29 but need some Hodgdon H4198 or VihtaVuori N120. So I'll just equally mix the two. This will be followed by:

Dear Ms. Blain,

On a serious note good reloading consist of developing and following good reloading habits. Will a flake or kernel or two of powder left in a powder throw matter? Likely not, but it goes against good practice of cleaning the powder dispenser. Good reloaders follow good reloading practices. It really is that simple.

Just My Take

I was wondering about the question as I have powder clinging onto the bottom of my trickler when I empty it back into the container.

If one or two flakes of powder left over in a measure made a difference, we would have damaged and dead reloaders all over the place, but I agree, always try to get it all out.

I wouldn't suggest it, and I personally have never tried it - but I've heard of something called 'rainbow' that had a certain following in the trapshooting community some years back. I'm not sure exactly what it was - but it involved a mix of red dot and green dot, I don't know if blue dot was in there or not. I suspect red dot and green dot are similar enough in composition with different retarders that the mix acted somewhere between the two in performance.

That said - I agree 100% don't mix powders.
