I would have thought it would have been a one in a million shot for this to happen across the pond. Maybe they're starting to get it after all. I would love to hear the opinion on this from fome our members in the U.K.

NSW upper house passes new gun laws19:37 AEST Thu Jun 19 2008agoVIEWS: 0| FLOCKS: 0| 0 comments so farNew gun laws passed in NSW parliament will start unravelling strict measures brought in after the Port Arthur massacre, the NSW Greens say.

A bill, passed on Thursday by the upper house, removes the 28-day waiting period for people with a registration waiting for a second or subsequent gun.

The Shooters Party-initiated bill also removes the need to register guns made prior to 1900 and introduces more exemptions for people without a licence to participate at shooting clubs.

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said the changes brought NSW "closer to the US with its liberal attitude to firearm use".

Gun laws around the nation were changed after 35 people were killed and 37 wounded on April 28, 1996, by lone gunman Martin Bryant at the historic Port Arthur tourist site in Tasmania.

Bryant is serving 35 life sentences in Tasmania's Risdon Prison, and will never be eligible for parole.

"The Shooters Party's private member bill represents the first unravelling of national uniform gun laws developed after the Port Arthur massacre," Ms Rhiannon said.

The bill was passed with the support of both the government and the coalition.

Ms Rhiannon said the government backed the bill to gain Shooters Party support for its electricity privatisation plans.

The government does not hold a majority in the upper house and will need the support of minor parties to pass its planned sell-off of the state's electricity retailers.

The Shooters Party bill will now go before the lower house.

I think that it is great. Anything that can be done to undo unjust gun laws should be done.

What would UK members care? This is Australia.

The question I didn't ask and should have is do you thinks this will have and effect on people thinking about moving similar legislation forward in the UK.

And Big45, the lord hates a smarta**. :neener::D

Australia is still under British Rule.
You sure about that? From wiki:
The Australia Act of 1986 effectively terminated the ability of the British Parliament or Government to make laws for Australia or its States, even at their request; and provided that any law which was previously required to be passed by the British Parliament on behalf of Australia could now be passed by Australia and its States by themselves. It also removed the right of the monarch personally (that is, not through the local Governor) to exercise his or her powers in the states, except when personally present in them. And it severed the last judicial link with the United Kingdom, by abolishing the right of appeal to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

I hate this type of politics. They made a huge gun restriction and then give a little back to get something else. Not because they believe it is right or the intial law was too strict but so they can buy votes for their electricity privatisation plans.

I would have to agree with you on that one.

I say they are likely beyond help. In Iraq the internet blocks sites for Australian and British forces that link to weapon related sites. These guys can't even log on to THR unless they can find an American sponsored internet computer. I was able to get a backdoor to the NRA and for some reason CMP was not blocked but just about everything else weapon related is blocked.

Gun owners have elected two members of the NSW Parliament to represent our interests directly, on an explicit and overt gun-ownership platform. They are yet again getting runs on the board in chipping away at the gun laws with which we were saddled in a blaze of moral panic.

The latest bill was passed overwhelmingly in the upper house with the support of both sides - the dark reference to a deal on electricity privatisation is no more than the bleating of an anti-gun obsessive who has been sidelined. Lee Rhiannon, an old Trotskyist, was after all involved in the formation of the National Coalition for Gun Control before scoring a position on the crossbenches of the NSW upper house.

:what:

Not for generations mate. The effective end of all that came with the adoption of the Statute of Westminster 1931. The Australia Act 1986 (supra.) only really cleared up the last vestiges.

You made me laugh though :p

I was seriously thinking of moving to Australia when I retired, but changed my mind after the idiots vilified all responsible gun owners based on the actions of one lunatic. Now I'm thinking there may be hope for our Aussie friends after all! Hooray!

One step at a time. Perhaps someday our Aussie friends will begin to once again be able to protect their families and property from those who choose to disobey laws. More laws just give law-breakers more opportunities.

That makes sense. :banghead:

You wouldnt want the guys in camo running around with machine guns and high explosives, and using them on the people deemed the enemy, being able to read about dangerous things like guns and knives! It's for the children!!!! someone might get hurt!

oh lordy, one of these days I'm gonna read something thats just so outrageously dumb, that I drop dead on the spot. At the rate things are going any more, that'll be next week.

I think titan6's comment is far more interesting than understanding exacty what rule astralia is under ;P
