I just got an 11-87 Super Mag yesterday. Today I went out in the snow and shot some shells to function test it. Fired 3 3" and 3 3.5" shells without any issues.

Went home to clean it and I found that the rubber O ring was destroyed..... whats up with that. This is the O rinf that goes on the mag tube between the piston and the ring on the barrel that attaches to the mag.

BTW: has anyone else noticed how damn confusing Remington's Owners manual is for this gun? I think the problem is that they changed the design of the piston after they printed the manual. Im not sure, but its confusing. The pictures do not match what im working with.

ALSO, i find that if I REALLY tighten down on the magazine tub cap the gun's action doesnt work....... is this common in this gun?Doesnt make any sense to me.l Im used to 870's where you just crank down on the cap real tight.

thanks for any help.

ETA: some info from remington:

http://remington.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/436/kw/11-87/r_id/166 OF COURSE the picture doesnt come up..... good lord, how can you make all these shotties to sell, bitch about how much the sales of American Shotties are down and not take the time to provide proper instructions to put together the current design of your shotgun.......... STUPID. 750 bucks on a new gun, you would think it would have intructions that reflect the actuall parts in your gun.

Is that a factory o-ring? Buy it new or used? Someone could have put a walmart o-ring in there. I had a mag extension I would tighten down with a rag and chanel locks so it wouldn't loosen up shooting. That never affected it.

The ring goes in the groove in the mag tube.

I've gone for years on the same o-ring in both the 1100 and 1187 supermag. My supermag has a barrel seal activator that you install if you are going to shoot light loads, and to be left out, if you are going to shoot heavy loads such as 3" and 3.5"s. The super mag is the only 1187 that has this extra part, not the standard 1187. My supermag cycles everything from 3.25 dram - 1 1/8 oz on up without it. Could yours have been installed, causing excessive pressure on the o-ring?

A new in the box 1100 I bought a few years back had the oring stuck to the barrel with the preservative. It was destroyed because I didn't do as the instructions said by disassembling and cleaning the entire gun before trying it out. That being said, the orings are not a big deal and can be bought at the hardware store by the pocket full if necessary. I haven't destryed more orings since then. I change mine about once per year just cause I am cleaning the gun anyway. That gun had a few jams in the first outing as well. I brought it home, cleaned it really well, and lubed it. I don't recall another jam in its time with me. I hope your experience with your new gun works out as mine did. Be patient my friend.

Did you clean the gun before shooting it? If not, the O-ring was probably destroyed by a rust preventative/grease. I went through a few on my 1100 because the oil I was using weakened them. Now, one lasts quite a long time

i cleaned it really well before putting it togther......

After talking to Remington it sounds like they will send me more O-Rings. My gun didnt come with this barrel seal activator.... i dont think. Can someone find a pic of one? I just have the pistol ring and the o - ring.

Dave

Her's a picture of mine in the order they stack on from right to left. Piston (flat side toward the action), Barrel seal activator (for light loads only), O-Ring (installed last in the detent in the mag tube). I hope this helps....chas

Yeah, mine didnt come with one.
As I stated in my first post, you only need it for light loads. I finaly got around to finding out where the cut off point was for mine and it seems that anything, including or lighter than 3dram-1oz, the BSA is needed. I didn't buy this gun to shoot "mouse fart loads" so it has not been an issue. My 1187 Super-Mag is the Special Purpose model with the stainless magazine tube. I'm not sure if that matters. As for O-rings. I run size 021 made from Viton. (not Buna rubber) Viton is impervious to petroleum based lubricants and most synthetics. I ordered a hundred count bag from a bearing/seal supply house. They cost a whopping $7 dollars for the whole bag. I also run them in my 1100. I hope you get your problem resolved. Best wishes.....chas

Do you have a website and part# for those O-Rings?

Thanks
I bought them at a bearing & seal supply house called "Motion Industries". They are located in San Antonio,Tx. Ph.# (210) 662-6672. I'm not sure if they are a national chain or just local. I don't have a web address for them. I paid $7 via credit card over the phone for a hundred count bag of Viton, size 021 o-rings. This was in March of 08 so they may have went up. They work great in my 1187 & 1100. Oh, and welcome to the High Road. I sent you a PM.

Motion is a chain, located in every industrial town on the Texas coast and nation wide, I think. Look 'em up in the yellow pages. I used to buy tens of thousands of dollars of vairous stuff off 'em when I worked for Dow Chemical's process research and engineering department. Got taken to lunch a lot by their sales guys. Between them and the guys that sold swagelock and parker compression fittings, I ate well. :D

They're great folks in S.A. I do a lot of business with them for the Co. I work for. I called them, told them what I needed, gave them my info. and a few days later My o-rings came in the mail.
