New 600-yard World Record. 0.579" Five-Shot Group.

Thought you guys might be interested in this item. Quite often the question comes up as to how accurate long-range rifles can be. Well a new 600-yard world record was shot this weekend in Sacramento: 0.579" for five shots. That makes the group, center to center, the size of the figurehead on a dime.

Hoppe Breaks NBRSA 600-yard Record with 0.579″ Group

Records continue to fall. Robert Hoppe of Reno, NV just smashed the NBRSA 600-yard record with a 0.579″ five-shot group at 600 yards. Don Nielson just called with the news from this weekend’s 600-yard NBRSA match at the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center.

Robert was shooting a 6mm Dasher with Varget powder and 105gr Hornady Amax bullets. His gun has a 28″ Hart Barrel, Panda Action with Jewell trigger, Dierks carbon fiber stock, and Nightforce 8-32X scope.

FYI, the 6mm Dasher is an "improved version" of the 6mmBR case (shoulder is moved forward and angle is widened to 40 degrees). It uses about 33-34 grains of powder and 90-107 grain bullets typically, though many folks use Dashers for varminting with lighter bullets too.

This coming from a guy who cold-bore hit a golfball from 500 meters on the very same Sac Valley range several years ago, as printed in November 1999 Tactical Shooter Magazine.

Something that confuses me, though. Which of the world benchrest records would that be? I see it says NBRSA, but what about IBS records for 600 yards? How about 1000 yards?

Rich DeSimone's 1000-yard, 1.564" 5-shot group using an improved 6.5x284 sticks out in my mind. See here:

Of course, his record is in the IBS books, not the NBRSA's. I'm guessing that each benchrest organization doesn't necessarily recognize records documented by the other.

center to center, am I the only one that measures from the outside edges? or is that just over achieving?

outside edges changes with caliber. i.e. a 50bmg could never shoot better than 1/2 MOA, even if all the shots went into exactly the same spot

Most of us should be happy with sub-1" 100 yard groups for centerfire. It takes an incredible amount of time and money to get the rifle, work up a load and practice enough to shoot groups even four times that size at 600 yards; I can't do 2" groups at 600 with any of my rifles, and I've got some pretty sweet set-up's with lots of range time and load development. I'm satisfied that I can drill praire dogs at over 500 yards with a ~40% hit ratio.

of course it was the best group of the day, and only a 3 shot group. I sure was happy about it though.
