When I started out learning shotgun, I put 150 rounds through the barrel of a Mossberg 500 in a defensive shotgun class. In those 150 rounds, using the shotgun for decently intensive shooting with proper form, I learned a lot about what does and does not fit me ergonomically. After the class, I went to a gun shop and held a Remington 870 and it solved a number of issues I was having with my Mossberg.
So my answer is that each person really needs to learn what features are important to them. My advice? Go buy a cheap pump shotgun (Mossberg Maverick?), shoot it a bunch, learn something about yourself, and then find the one that really fits you. Neither of those brands are poorly made.
But if you want a recommendation, I do find the Remington 870 to be quite nice. The action is much smoother than my the Mossberg 500. I do not know how a Benlli feels.
