I recently bought an 18 inch barrel for my 870 Wingmaster and am considering a magazine extension. I will probably get the Remington brand one. My question is which extension fits flush with the end of the 18 in. barrel ? The 2 round extension ? Thanks.

I know that a 3 round protrudes just a bit past the barrel of a true 18" barrel (measured internally to the bolt face). A 2 shot extension will put you just behind the barrel tip, I believe. So yeah, neither will be perfect, as far as I have seen.

I should add that I used a Tac-Star extension. There are probably a few millimeters of difference between brands, but I can't imagine too much variation.

If your barrel is a true 18 1/8" factory barrel (measured from the muzzle to the closed bolt face), the 2-round Remington extension will protrude about half an inch beyond the muzzle. That's because the Remington extension was originally designed to be used with a bayonet (870 Mark I), and the plug at the end of the extension was designed to fit the hole in the M7 bayonet- see the pictures in Post #6 at http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?p=90581 .

If on the other hand your barrel is a newer 18.5" model, the Remington 2-round factory extension will fit flush with the muzzle- see the pic at http://gastatic.com/UserImages/1996/946748505/wm_2590749.jpg .

A remington 3-round magazine extension is the only option for me in the country where I live. I cannot buy a 2-round mag extension. How long will the 3-round mag extension go past the 18.5 in barrel of my 870?

If the 2 round extension sticks out a half inch then based on the 2 3/4 inch shell the 3 rounder wound stick out at least about 3 1/4 inches. That would be too much in my opinion. If you need or simply want the 3 round extension why not try to locate a 20 inch barrel? I have 2 870 Wingmasters with 20 inch barrels and can move around my house just as easily as with my Winchester 1200 with an 18 inch barrel.
