I am new to this forum and owning/shooting the M4 stlye rifle, so I wanted to get some feedback on a build I was looking into.

CMT M4 Cut Upper
16" Operator chrome lined barrel w/out F front sight
10" Troy MRF-MX rail
PRI Flip-Up Front Sight Gas Block
PRI Flip-Up Rear Sight
PRI Tac Latch on a CMT Charging Handle
Young Manuf Chrome Bolt
Standard Bolt Carrier Group
Possibly a Vortex Flash Hider

Thank you!

Sounds like a do-able build.

If your state allows it without hassle, use an M16 bolt carrier.
If the powers that be want to cause problems, use a trimmed M16 carrier, I like the High Standard version.
I would recommend a bolt parts upgrade of a Chrome silicone extractor and ejector springs, black extractor spring buffer insert, and a D-Fender D ring.

Having used both, I would recommend a Yankee Hill Manufacturing crenelated Phantom flash suppressor/muzzle brake over a Smith Enterprise Vortex.

welcome to THR. sounds like a good build to me.
i love the vortex. chrome lined barrel good choice, glad to see you have buis and front flip as well.

what butstock are you thinking about? the vltors are neat but the regular ole 6 positions are fine by me.

what kinda lower?

i personally don't like the defender d rings and such and all that mess around the extractor. nothing like one disentegrating while shooting and locking up the extractor.

D-Fenders are made of a space age polymer and do not fall apart.
The part is not affected by chemicals, solvents, heat, or cold.
This is the same material used in the space agency for gasketing material.
The manufacturer warrants the part for the life of the owner.
At $10.00 they aren't cheap and they are worth every penny spent.

This part is not an automotive parts store O ring.

Try one before you slam it.

you mean the same gasket material that caused the last space shuttle to return to earth in tiny pieces?

vortex++

skip the chrome bolt.

Try one before you slam it.
that would be going against what i preach there pal.

i have used them in trainning courses.
i have used ar's without them n trainning courses ,never had any issues either way. i am quite finiky about having stuff stuffed in my extractor area of my weapon. i have been shooting one for years with out one and see no need. have used it and saw no real advantage, and with my serious concerns personally i won't use one especially in a carbine that i am gonna use if my life depends on it.

I've had a D-Fender in my suppressed SBR for about a year now, and about 1000 rounds. Its holding up quite well. I was having lots of problems with the extractor overriding the case rim during extraction. The D-Fender solved the problem for me. I would prefer that my rifle not need such a thing. After much experimentation (different ammo, different bolts, different carriers, different lowers), The D-Fender was the only thing that helped. I can't remember the last time I had a rim override.

I'll let you know if mine disintegrates. Don't hold your breath.

Would you change anything in the build?

I am open to suggestions for extra parts, but please let me know what your opinion is on the setup I have listed. After that, feel free to promote whatever additional parts you would like to.

Thank you.

To chrome or not to chrome...?

I was thinking along the lines of cleaning the chamber. I am familiar with the M16A2 rifle, and cleaning was never much fun. :) Is this different on the M4 style rifles?

I'd change from the 10" Troy MRF-MX rail to a Midwest Industries, in my opionion they're about the same darn thing, Midwest is a little cheaper.

You didn't say which stock or lower or trigger type?

I'm currently collecting the parts for a "Special Purpose Rifle" type upper.

18" Bushy Heavy Barrel, Phantom Flash Hider, Standard BCG and Colt bolt, Knights Armament M5 hand guards, Harris 9-13" bipod, Yankee Hill Machine bipod adapter... haven't decided on which low profile gas block, but it will be a "low profile", leaning to the YHM since it's almost as long as a standard front site base, but I would like something "super low profile".

I'm considering selling the KAC M5 Hand Guards and getting the Midwest Industries Rifle Length free float hand guards.

Make sure you check out AR15..com there's ton's of information there.

Sounds like real nice setup to me, with the exception of no carry handle, but thats just me, I have some weird thing where AR's just don't look right without one, but thats purely a csmetic thing based on my pesonal, groundless quirk.I totaly understand the reasoning/practicality of not having one though, which is why I got my Bushmaster with the removeable carry handle. That way, if it turns out I dont like having the scope with QD rings on the carry handle, I can take the handle off to put it lower, but put the carry handle back on when I'm shooting short distaces,or putting it back on the rack till next time I go shooting (I like the irons for close up, so the scope comes off except when I plan to short long range, thats why I got good QD rings so I can takeit on and off and no lose zero), so it looks right again.I have NO idea what my deal is with the carry handle. It just bugs me.Yes, I'm weird.

Balance, everything you have listed goes with the upper half. Do you have a similar list of components for the lower half?
