Ordered a new AR pistol from PSA a few hours before Biden announced he wanted them banned. Ordered a lower with their enhanced trigger, Magpul grip, and SB3(?) brace. Then ordered a 10.5" upper. Finally got to go pick it up from the FFL today and stopped by the gravel pit I've been using to try it out.

I've never fired a short-barreled AR before. Never seen one being fired. All I know about them is from what I've read on the internet. And the consensus seems to be that they are horribly loud, obnoxious to shoot, too much blast, and pretty much useless.

When I picked mine up, my FFL is also a Sheriff's Deputy and a huge fan of the AR platform. 80% of his inventory is AR gear. I asked him to recommend a muzzle device to help tame the muzzle blast since I heard it was so bad and may cause sterility.

He said to just shoot it first before wasting any money. He said the people that complain about excessive noise and blast from the AR pistols are the same guys that complain about the .40 S&W.

So I did.

Typical Spring day in that it was sunny, but random wind with a bunch of dust devils out on the way to the range...

Got my new folding bench set up and new MTM Caseguard target stand ready 25 yards away. Both items met expectations and are now my official range gear.

I had purchased the Magpul flip-up sights as the main sights since I didn't want to add anything electronic or complicated to this firearm. Pistol was not cleaned or lubed. Just inspected for clear of obstructions and function checked. First 3 shots were perfectly centered but low.

Adjust, then two more shots, adjust again, and the last three shots were perfect and in a 1/2" group...

Decided to prove that group by then firing a 10-shot group that was barely just over an inch big...

Ejection was remarkably consistent at between 7' and 8.5' away...

Did a quick fun drill by firing ten rounds starting at 20 yards, then closing and firing while moving on the target until at 10 yards.

Got 7 rounds on the paper plate, with the other 3 a couple of inches low. Not bad for iron sights, but this gun is screaming for a red dot, so will oblige it soon.

Overall, just extremely pleased with this firearm. Incredibly accurate, fun, with no noticeable blast or recoil, or anything obnoxious. My girlfriend will love it. She loves my Extar, and this is about 2" longer.

Can't wait to give it my custom touch and put a red dot on it to see what it can really do once my old eyes are given some help.

Whoever said that short barreled ARs are pretty much useless doesn't know their @ss from their elbow. In 556 caliber, 10.5" and up is where to be and there is plenty of actual legit data to prove they are effective, particularly within defensive ranges. If you need to engage in live fire with someone over 150 yards away, you've got bigger problems legally.

Congrats on the new addition and enjoy the heck out of it!

I like my AR pistol. It is quite handy to move around with compared to my "full size" 16" AR that I also have. Both are great rifles and setup for different roles. 5.56 gets a little barky at 10.5" and under barrels because of unburnt powder. With ears on and focused on the target, I don't notice it very much compared to a longer AR. If I were shooting it indoors, at night in the dark, without hearing protection that might be a different story. But I don't plan to cross that bridge.

For my AR pistol I put a flash can on it. Makes the build look a little better (IMO) and gets you less PO range companions if you shoot indoors. They direct the sound and blast forward of the shooter instead of to the sides like a muzzle break or up like a compensator. They do nothing to dampen the noise like a suppressor, they just move it forward.

He said the people that complain about excessive noise and blast from the AR pistols are the same guys that complain about the .40 S&W.

Local indoor range has a Galil ACE 7.62x51 pistol with brace. Even with ears on I haven't had the balls to try to cork a .308 off that close to my ears indoors :)

My hearing is to the point I was sighting in my .300 BLK a few summers ago, 110 grain supersonic, and forgot to put my ears on.

Didn't even notice other than the timbre was a bit different. Good news for it as a hunting round, bad news for my hearing in general.

AR Pistols make for a nice "pistol only" hunting season if one's F&G allow. Ours allows any "pistols" chambered in calibers originally for pistols, they provide a list. So a 10mm AR or other "pistol" with a brace makes for a nice option for those hunts.

kinda neat looking but hard to formulate a mission statement for it except for "fun."

Take a 9" 300 blackout upper and put a 7" suppressor on the end (which makes it the same length as a standard m4) and shoot some 110gr supers and 220gr subs and you might find that some mission statements other than "fun."

110-120gr velocities (out of 9" barrels can hit 2,100 fps) great for hunting, home defense
190-220gr subs with good expanding bullets like Lehigh Defense and Maker's Rex provide great options for close range hunting.

Try a linear compensator for your AR Pistol. It reduces muzzle flash, noise and pushes the blast forward. You’ll realize the difference if you ever shoot indoors.
