.223 is fine. lets face it soldiers are crap shots. no point giving them bigger cal as they wont be able to take advantage of the added capabilitys. anyway what r u's complaining about we have the SA80.

OICW - anypics?

The Land Warrior system is integrating the soldier with the rifle through special battlefield equipment. The gun (presently the OICW, but not finished) will have special optics mounted allowing the operator to see down the barrel through his helmet mounted display. The optics are interchangeable (or will be) on the OICW. They have not decided on a caliber for the rifle portion of the OICW yet (at least as far as I know). They say they want to go with a smaller (physical size) cartridge which will allow the operator to carry more ammunition (since most future combat will be urban, rifle calibers are "no longer neccessary"). The Land Warrior system will replace basic infantry/riflemen. Squads will still have support weapons like the SAW and such. The operator will also have a computer as part of his loadout. It will enable him to send and receive realtime data. It will also allow the battlefield commander to see what is happening in realtime from a command center.

Personally, I think it is a bunch of crap and will always have problems. I am a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. method of warfare. As much as I dislike the M-16 and M-4 rifles, they are what I would choose in the heat of battle. That is, unless they gave me an M-14. :D

going to a smaller round so they can carry more? Jeez, why don't they just buy Ruger 10/22s and a bunch of preban Ramline 50 round magazines?

Why does the chart refer to the magazines as "clips"?
This whole R&D tangent seems like wasted money. H & K found that out with their caseless ammo program in the 1980's. With the residue of Cold War production still floating around, new small arms purchases seem to be wasted money.

No joe is gonna wanna slug that OICW around for any length of time. Plus, watch the electronics die the first time it gets wet.

Gimme an FAL anyday...

In the photo the phrase 'developed with the user, for the user' reminds me of the episode in which Homer's long lost brother lets him design the new car for everyman...
