Since primers are so hard to find, I have been looking at other solutions. I bought this primed brass from Natchezss. When I was inspecting the brass prior to loading, I noticed the black line inside the case mouth. I was wondering if anyone has seen something like this black line inside new brass. Let me know your thoughts what that line is for.

I have never seen cases like that but it appears to be a bead of sealant.

huh...see if you can stick your finger in there and feel it...i'm thinking that it may be a sealant like kruff said, to aid in holding the bullet so it doesn't get pushed back into the case during rough feeding.

Normally Federal cannelures their cases to keep bullets from being pushed deeper. I don't see any cannelure on that case. Sealent? Maybe...

Sounds like military ball ammo that had sealer on the bullet, then they were pulled down,(de-militarized), the black ring is where the bullet stopped pushing the sealant down in the case.

The sealant is an asphalt, oil based compound. If it bothers you, it could be easily removed with anything that would cut tar, like mineral spirits. If it were me, I'd shoot em once, then clean out to sealant. While there's no danger of messing up the primer, it won't hurt nothing, do the clean up later.

No, it's not pulled military brass. That one in the picture has never had a bullet in it, or the sealer ring would be smeared and spread out further down in the case.

I'd say it is sealer applied to brand new brass all right, then diverted to commercial sales.

"...Sounds like military ball ammo..." No such thing as .40 S&W milsurp ball. Police contract over run maybe. Nothing to worry about.

I think RC is probably right. For whatever reason, there's a lot of places selling off this batch of Federal primed .45 brass right now. Federal (and other ATK brands) do use a dark sealant on many of their rounds. I once ran into a batch of American Eagle .45 stuff that had some of the CMJ bullets mangled during seating...on pulling them, I found they were sealed with the same stuff.

I'm gettin' tired of rcmodel always being right...It makes the rest of us wrong...I hate that...

Oh...Hi rc....Didn't see ya behind that post.:D

I just found some 1X fired Speer nickel plated 9mm+P with a tar sealant like that and granules of powder stuck to it. It has a cannelure too, just where the bullet was seated to. Guess I'll slop in some mineral spirits and go from there.

Those brass have the worst case of the dreaded "black mouth disease" I've ever seen. Best send them to me for viral isolation.

:D

Don't send them to him! I don't believe he will "isolate" them at all. In fact, I believe he will mix them in with others and try to cross-contaminate them all. :neener:

Just got some Federal Primed brass in 45ACP that is clean as a if Mr. Clean lived in the case! It was probably pull down brass.
