New Bushy AR having malfs.

Lube and MAgazines are the first thing I always check

On a new gun it could be something more

Things may have changed, but the mags that came with Bushmaters a few years ago were not the best quality....things may be better now that the AWB is dead

If you do as someone else suggested and just hand load a single round into the chamber and fire it and the empty case doesn't eject I'd say to check the ejector. May be some gunk in it's hole in the bolt not letting it do it's job. The ejector spring may be bad also.

You've gotten some good advice so far. Some AR's need to "break in" (200-300 rounds) before the become 100% relaible. Durring this time, make sure the rifle is well lubed. When I say well lubed, what I mean is almost over-lubed.

If you still haved issues, you need to rule out both tha magazine(s) and ammo by changing them up. The Wolff spring is a nice upgrade but on a new weapon, it's unlikely that is the issue. Try all of that and let us know if you are still having issues.

another thing to check. field strip the bolt and inspect the gas rings. the ring gap should be offset 1/3 from each other. if they are in line, or close to inline, they may be allowing gas to get by them causing a short stroke.

Last fall my rifle started exhibiting the same malfunction you described. It was very frustrating because the rifle had never had a single malfuction in the previous 2500 rounds.

I started checking all of the things mentioned so far. Lube, Magazines, gas tube, carrier key, ammo, etc. Then it dawned on me, the problem started right after I installed the collapsible stock!. I installed it in September, but didn't get to shoot it for a few weeeks. I forgot to consider what had changed with the rifle that may cause the problems.

I put the A2 stock back on, and BINGO, no problems. I tried a number of combinations of lighter and heavier action springs, plus standard CAR buffer, H buffer, and 9mm buffer. I finally settled on a Wolff extra power action spring, and an H buffer. Since these changes the rifle has been 100% reliable.

This may not solve your problem, but I just wanted to pass on my experience.

A buddy had a similar sounding problem with Olympic ammo.
It is evidently a little under powered to function reliably.

He switched to XM-193 at my suggestion.
Guess what....No more reliability problems !

The rifle is a DPMS!

My Bushy has never had any type of failure. Since I had CMMG install one of their 16" Mod 4 barrels that O failure rate still stands..

Incidently...my Bushy would choke occasionally with his crappy ammo ( 6 times in a single 30rnd mag)

Since I only tested a little of it as a comparison, I won't call these malfs in my Bushy.

We also found that off the bench firmly supported the crappy stuff function fine. Shooting unsupported is when the failures showed themselves.

Well guys, just got back from the range after running another 200 rounds of the same Remington ammo as the other day,but guess what, NO MALFS!!!
Woowhoo!

Musta' been she's either finally broken in or that I cleaned and lubed the crap out of it the other night, maybe a combo of both. I still need to run another 600 or so rounds without malfs to be completely confident in it.As of now however, no new springs,H-bfers,or the like.....YET! Hell maybe I'll still do all that anyway to pre-empt any future problems.

Thanks for everyones help....

keitharsis,

That's good to hear. Just to be certain, what I didn't explain was that my problem was only occuring during rapid firing. I shot some rounds at one range that only allows 1 shot per second, and the rifle worked fine. It was only when I went a 3-gun match and started shooting rapidly that the jams began. I think my problem was the buffer bouncing. I don't know for sure, but I tried a heavier buffer, and it cured the problem.

I hope you have your problem behind you, but if intend to shoot rapidly later, test it now.

Be very careful with such "reliability enhancements". They are designed to address specific problems in certain rifles or applications rather than be general cure-alls and you can "enhance" your rifle right into a non-functioning state that can be difficult to diagnose - particularly if you change a lot of things at once.

If it is working the way you want it to run, then I'd leave well enough alone. If a problem crops up, then consider a fix for that problem.

Great to hear.

Had a a problem w my bushy after 3k rounds, and they "sealed gas system".

runs like a champ again.

Everytime I read a thread like this it reminds me I need to take an ar armorers class.

Bushmasters service is great.
