It has been a while since I posted any finished knives. No excuses, just lazy. This camp knife is a total recycle job. I forged the blade from a salvaged leaf spring and the handle came from of all things..a scrapped pallet at work. OAL is 13-ish inches with a 8 1/2" blade. Thanks for looking.
I follow Ed Caffrey's process for hardening my 5160 blades. So far I have had good reports on my 5160 knives but to tell the truth I have not tested this particular blade yet. It still is unsharpened. I leave them that way until I have the sheath completed(saves on Band-Aids). I like leaving some of the forge marks in a blade, (unless the person I am making it for does not want them.) partly for aesthetics and partly because it takes a long time to draw file out forge marks. I really need to get a grinder someday, Whew! Thanks for your gracious comments Gentlemen.
Man, that is a good looking knife. Love the recycled approach too. Did you flame the handles to get that coloring or did you just get lucky and find a nice chunk of wood to start with?
USAF Vet--I too have found some very nice hardwood made into pallets--That is, if you want to make something small, like a knife handle. They use good material in pallets!
