Will be my first new rod in 30 years. Will use it on my .22 & 30 cal sporter rifles. What say you? Brand name?

Brand probably doesnt matter, get a one piece, and try to avoid bare steel, get brass, or make sure it has a coating on it so it will not harm your barrel.

+1 on coated rod. +1 on one-piece, too, therefore have no joints to catch and hold crud.
I happen to have Dewey rods and they work nicely, but any other maker will do just as well IMHO. My LGS sells the Deweys.
To protect the rod so's it doesn't get bent: Make a case for it out of PVC pipe--One long piece to hold the rod; cap one end, larger diameter piece for the handle with screw-off cap. Glue-weld it all together, and poof, you have a custom case for yr clng rd. Paint it if you want it to look less clunky.
Easy, quick, and cheap insurance.
BTW, it's not a good idea to use a .22 cal rod on a .30 cal bore--get ye 2 rods, one for each. The little .22 (They're really little; most also do .17's) will get bent easily if you have a "difficult" patch in the .30.
Clng rods don't cost that much so get the 2 calibers. But replacing one you pushed too hard on & bent, OOH, that grinds!!

I picked up one of those tiptons jhansman mentioned and am very impressed. I got the 22-26 cal one, it's a .208" diamater since I already have a .30 cal one.
I gave up on the sectioned rods, they bend, kink, and unscrew themselves, not to mention the ping of terror you feel dragging one of those sections over the crown.

The Tipton rods get strange reviews; a bunch of 5 stars and a cluster of one stars. Either folks love the way they work or they fail completely and are useless. Odd...

I actually bought a .22 caliber one to use mainly with my muzzle loader, but got it in the smallest caliber so I can do my other rifles if I have too. I bought a thread kit to make it work.
My friend and I used the Tipton last night for the first time and it's awesome. I'd definitely get one of those. Carbon Fiber so no coating to come off or something to stick too, super strong and no screwing and unscrewing rods.

I use all Pro-Shot 1 piece stainless rods on my rifles, I have 2 .22 cal, 1 .30 cal and a .177 cal rod. No complaints at all. I use bore guides in everything, the rods do not pick up crud at all.

I do not think there is a bearing in there but the way they are machined you wouldn't know it, I took the rod out once and the way the end inside the handle is machined it is held in by a pin from the side, I actually drilled the pin out to pull the rod out. I could not see if there was a bearing inside or not.
The rod spins glass smooth when pulling or pushing with it, and if one ever gets messed up Pro-Shot will replace it. They sent me one free of charge when the rod on mine would no longer spin while pulling through the bore and let me keep the old one. So I cut the rod out, inserted a stud to hold screwdriver bits and used the rod for all sorts of things so far, only one of which is gun related.
FYI... a stainless rod with a threaded end makes a great plastic getter outer when chucked in a cordless drill with the other end wrapped in 0000 steel wool through a shogun bore.
