Hello all,
I’ll start off by saying this is going to be a longer post. I purchased a new Colt AR15-A4 last year in November. When I received the gun there were issues with it right away. The M4 feed ramps were cut incorrectly, there were scraps on the barrel, and the safety did not engage correctly. I sent the gun into Colt and it sat for 4 months until I called them. They stated they were behind but would put it at the front of the line. Instead what they did was swap the upper and shipped it out. Ok good for them on that. Low and behold I get the new gun and there are still issues. The upper looked like it had been used with scrap marks inside the receiver down to the bare metal and the bolt was as loose as a goose. I called Colt up again and stated the issues. This time Colt said send in the upper and they would do a swap. Perfect I thought so I sent in the upper and within 2 weeks my replacement arrived. The new upper looks way better except now the barrel M4 feed ramps look worse then the first one I sent in, there are two gouge marks in the barrel, and there what looks to be a couple of bend marks in the gas tube, and the gas tube seems to not be centered on the front post. I called Colt again and this time they asked if the feed ramps were causing a function problem. I told them that it didn’t matter if it functioned correctly or not that it looked like someone went in there with a Dremel and that wasn’t acceptable on an almost $1,100 rifle. The gentleman at Colt said that they couldn’t guarantee that there wouldn’t’ be cosmetic issues with the barrel or any part of the gun and asked what I wanted to do about it. I told him at this point I want them to purchase the gun back and they agreed to do so. Stating I’d get an RMA in my inbox. I’m writing this to get everyone’s opinion and if there happens to be any gunsmiths reading this your expertise would be greatly appreciated. I’ve attached pictures and I’m wondering if this looks like it should to you or if I’m over QCing the issue. What I’m afraid of is that the locking lug between the feed ramps has been shaved off too much and will cause issues down the road as there is not a lot of surface for the bolt lug to lock onto at this point. I’m also worried about the gas tube having impeded function do to the kink in it. Are these issues I’m seeing or is it shootable and will live up to its life expectancy?
Oh, a little bit about my experience with the AR platform. I was in the Army National Guard for 13 years. My assigned weapon was the M16A2 and then an M16A4 both with the M203 grenade launcher attached to them. That was until I finally got the armor to assign it to a Specialist lol. I also have assisted cleaning many M16’s and in doing so I’ve never AR’s that that looked like this. Worn yes but damaged no.
Pictures below. I took some pictures with the bolt in the chamber for reference.
