Got a new pony for the herd. It followed me home from the gun show this weekend. Its at about 90% condition; with slight carry wear around the end of the barrel and the backstrap. It also came with a Colt holster. I traded a Smith & Wesson 10-5 for it plus some $. It came with original wood grips numbered to the gun; I lucked out and found some rubber wrap around grips with a colt medallion and replaced the grips. Serial number puts it at a 1966 manufacture. I can't wait to get it out the range next week and shoot it.

Good trade, as it seems there are very few Official Police available these days on the market. And when you do find one in decent shape, it's priced way up there. Lets see some pix when you get a chance.

Here, by request, is a pic of my Official Police:

Took it to the range last night and shot some of my best groups. It's a great shooting revolver and has become my new favorite.

"I lucked out and found some rubber wrap around grips ..."

You call this luck?

There are 2 New Colt Police revolvers at a local shop, but I haven't actually looked at them yet. The finish on one of them is pretty worn and costs about $450. The other looks like the one in your picture and is around $270. I have not actually inspected them so I do not know the bore conditions etc.

I had not been interested in them until I found this post. What prices have they been going for?

Also, is there a difference between "New Colt Police" and "New Colt Official Police"? Thanks.

I would like to find some original wood grips for my I frame Colt Trooper .357 but for now I settling for Pachmayre presentation grips :(

a classic

These revolvers are American classics. I've always like the appearance, handling, and accuracy. They fit me better than the comparable Smiths I remember one I had in .32-20 with a 5 inch barrel (not often seen, I believe)that was particularly sweet.
Take care of it and it will take care of you.

capttom

I just saw a S&W in fair condition, in .32-20 and with a 5" barrel, at a LGS. They were asking close to $750 for it.

I bought a Colt Official Police in a local shop late last year for $300.

I thought it was a bargain, don't see too many Colts in this area. I generally prefer S&Ws but this Colt has the smoothest double action of any revolver I own (including other Colts).

The Colt Official Police is a mid-frame revolver. It formed the basis of the Colt 357, Python, and so on.

The Colt Police Special is a smaller frame. With a 2" barrel, it became the Detective Special.

That photo is one of the original models with the Shark tooth front site like on the New Service. Nice gun. I still have the Mark III OP I was issued in
1973. It has a ramp front site otherwise much the same. I now use it for CCW as it is a nice concealable size and sturdy enough for +p.

I got this OP off GunBroker last year for $165.

No extra charge for the snazzy custom stocks.

Came accross this thread while researching the OP. My interest stirred by the fact that I recently bought one for $300.00. Serial number if I read the chart right puts it as a 1940 Mdl. In general appearance between the two pictured above . Mecanically appears very sound, good clean bore no rust. Holster wear on the cylinder ant near the muzzle. ser # 649xxx Grips are plastic checkard with a sort of flare in the border at top and bottom. One grip chipped on the bottom. Appears to be very accurate what little Ihave shot it.

You guys seem to have some exceptionly clean guns as compared to what I have been seeing at the gun shows and as compared to mine!:fire:
