New Dillon 650XL Owner

After 3 long weeks of sitting in the back-order queue, and before that, two months of trying to justify adding ANOTHER progressive press to my bench my Dillon 650XL with optional case feeder, bullet tray, strong mount, roller handle, low powder sensor, and I forget what else, came today. Setup was a snap. I watched a quick video, threw all of the instruction books in a big pile out of the way. It took maybe 2.5 hours from dragging the boxes in the house to loading 100 rounds. The fit and finish seems better than my Hornady LnL AP, and the case feeder, there's just no comparison. For what Hornady charges for their case feeder, it ought to be at least as nice as th Dillon....the Dillon is 10 times nicer.

You shouldn't have done that, the Hornady case feed won't work any better with a heavy layer of dust on it.

Looks like your loading 9mm on your 650, did you ever load that on the LNL?

I only tried rifle on the LNL's I had but thought the 1/2 index on up stroke and other 1/2 on down stroke might keep a flake or two of powder from leaving the case.

Along the same subject I would suggest the thrust bearing mod to the new 650.

I only load handgun. The LnL index action does fling a bit of powder, as does the Dillon. I'll have to look into the thrust bearing mod you mention. I've seen where shortening the spring under the shell plate detent in the Dillon will smooth out the index, but I'm not there yet.

If you look close at the LnL case feeder, to the right of the chute, you'll see a piece of cardboard that I taped on it. The bowl was mounted so crooked on the case feeder that cases just spilled out on the floor. Hornady said I could send it in, or they would walk me through fixing it over the phone, but I was able to do it just by taping some cardboard to the side.

Interesting, I bought a used 650xl setup about the same recently and have the LNL but no case feeder. I had to order a conversion kit for 40 and being out of town haven't had a chance to load on it yet. I wasn't unhappy with the LNL but got a deal I couldn't pass up.

Once you get a little more experience with it, I'd like a little more of a critique of the too. I plan on doing that myself down the road.

You will really like it after loading buckets of .223, .308, '06, etc. I have found that ball type powders flow easily. After 200-300 rounds I use an old toothbrush with some compressed air to clean around the shell plate and primer disc.
