yes , but they are over 200 bucks. for that money i would prefer a mossy, or stevens. the mossy makes one that is made for kids , but comes with a full set of recoil spacers, for them to grow into. you can find them , with a scope package, usually for under 350 dollars total. Basspro had the mossy on sale (called the Bantam) with scope, for 300 bucks even, i do believe. If I did not allready have a super 788 in 243, i woulda jumped all over that one. A total steal. the stevens , all by itself, will be about 275.

I saw one at Walmart and it was a youth model for under 300. I think a H&R handy rifle would also be a good pick, instead of buying new guns you simply buy a new barrel. I have seen them with scopes for around $260 at Dicks.

I've got one in 30/30 and it's built like a tank. It's one o the guns I know will still be around when I'm 80.

The barrel program is awesome, you can have them fit a 20ga barrel for him now, and then add calibers and gauges as he grows.

Rossi has a .243 heavy barrel or a matched pair/set. With the pairs/sets you get more barrels, thus more fun. They make youth and adult of each. Give it a look. I have the matched set with a .243 12 gauge and .50 cal inline. Great little gun, not heavy at all. I got the three barrel deal for $250.

assuming your son is a youth, here's the link: http://www.rossiusa.com/products/gunselector-results.cfm?series=MYC

I have NEFs in .223, 204 Ruger, and .243. The .223 and 204 Ruger hav e bull barrels and are both tack drivers. The .243, standard barrel, isn't as accurate as the others but it isn't too shabby with 100 gr bullets. The only negative I've ever heard about the NEF .243s are the ultra lights.

They are a club. I do not care for them, for the same money you can usually find something much better for just a few dollars more. while being basically a 1.25 inch tube of 4140 CM barstock whittled down, they are strong, but they are slow to get a second shot off. they are not going to bring top dollar on resale, and while some are more accurate than expected, there are a lot which have a hard time not being called scatterguns. Its like renting a gun when you buy for a kid. you spend 200 on a NEF and you might get 75 back for it when you upgrade. you spend 300 on a used 700, or a new mossberg or stevens, and you get 225 or more back from it.
