I'm not much into Shotguns and I really do not want to spend a whole lot, but can you tell me more about this particular Brand and model?

What are your experiences? Do you own one? Pros and cons?

All I know is this is a single shot Shotgun. I found one at Wally World for $89.00

Peace,

If referring to NEF ( NEF/H&R) these are Old Proven Single Shot Designs. Great guns!

I don't have my catalog, didn't take time to do a Teoma search for the link. I can say I have shot these in all 4 gauges , taken a LOT of game, have set up a LOT of folks with one variation or another for a "gun to have around the house".

I gave my Mom a Youth 20ga model with fixed Mod chokle bbl. Patterns some of the best patterns I have ever seen, and groups slugs to rival more high dollar guns with fancy chokes and loads.

HTH

Thanks SM,

I'm planning to pick one up this afternoon. As a birthday gift (for me). So you think $89.00 is worth it?

I'm deciding between a 12g and a 20g. What do you think?

Peace!

Buy it. The downside to these is they are VERY light for the load. That means beaucoup kick. Use light loads and not Maggie Numbs. Either 20 or 12 will do as a messaround and woods running shotgun.

Adding a recoil pad if not so fitted is a good idea.

Over the last 40 years I've seen a number of singles like these made up as backpackers, truck guns, etc. They're good and durable, last forever and are as reliable as sunrise.

More ammo choices in 12 gauge,. 20 gauge ammo is lighter to carry.

HTH....

Don't know the intended purpose you have in mind.

Agree with Dave on the 12 having more ammo choices - and kick.

Personally right partial to the youth 20 ga I gave mom for a truck gun. This has caused many to buy same for their Mom's , Trucks, and such.

Remember - no matter what one buys for HD, make sure those in less stature can handle the Shotgun too. Especially if the only SG.

A bigger fella can always handle a smaller shotgun, a petite lady, or teenager may not. ;)

STOEGER instead...

Thanks Dave and Sm,

I passed by my local gun store and found a better choice for the same price. I'm not sure how familiar you guys are, but I purchased a STOEGER Single Barrel Classic (mod. 31600), 12/26. It had a better recoil pad, and interchangable choke, unlike the Wally World version of the NEF or H&R. Brand new for $89.00.

I really don't have a specific purpose for it. But I'm excited to shoot it.

are all chokes standard or do i have to buy Stoeger brand?

Peace!

Not all chokes are interchangeable,40. There's at least ten systems I can think of, some are not brand specific but interchange between a few brands. Chances are yours is available from the aftermarket sources like Brownell's and Carlson's.

Ask the folks at the gun shop what interchanges.

Now go BA/UU/R and have fun....

I bought the 20 ga for my wife. I started shooting it and really lke the way it feels. I'm planning to pick up a NEF Handi-rifle for myself, and I'm going to have a 12ga barrel fitted to it. You can have shotgun barrels fitted to the rifle receivers, but you can't have rifle barrels fitted to the shotguns.

NEF is an excellent shotgun for the money. Funny that I see the local shops selling them, fairly beat up, for $69 all day long! I'd just go to Wally World and get a new one instead.

Chokes...

man...so many chokes to choose from... which one's best for HD or for just messin' around...

...per my understanding i have a modified choke (3 notches) inserted in my Stoeger...

...what's can i shoot with modified?

peace!

Modified is a good, all-around upland bird hunting choke, and decent for informal clays shooting, too.

I shoot everything from cylinder bore to extra-full. Cylinder, skeet and improved are used mostly for skeet shooting. Full, extra-full, and trap are good for trap shooting, turkey hunting, duck hunting (although you should go down one choke size if you are using steel shot).

On the courses around here, modified is being used more than anything else for sporting clays.

Home defense is a whole other story. There are arguements in favor of cylinder bore for a wider pattern or full choke to keep more pellets on target at a longer range. One thing to remember if you are defending yourself in your home is penetration through walls. If you have a full-choke with a small shot size (#6 or #8), at close range, it's almost like hitting someone with a slug, but will not penetrate through as many layers of sheetrock.

I would pick up a wide range of chokes and pattern them. See what works for you, your chosen load, and your shotgun the best.
