I bought a NIB Rock Island Armory 1911 in .38 Super for $305.00 + $14.00 shipping + $20.00 FFL fee for a total of $339.00.

Purchased a new "drop-in" 5" 1911 SS 9mm barrel from Ebay about 5 months ago for $50.00, including shipping. Also bought a barrel link and link pin set for $15.00, bringing the grand total to $404.00.

I already had a 9mm magazine on hand. I also had some CocoBolo grip panels laying around I installed (the original grip panels were decent looking!!) I have not fired the conversion yet but it chambers factory FMJ rounds smoothly.

Observations on the Rock Island pistol: the finish is parkerized, the overall fit is actually very good. The slide to frame fit is tighter than a typical mil-spec 1911. Everything snicks, clicks, cocks, and slides smoothly, impressive for a sub $350.00 pistol. There is a tiny bit of creep in the trigger and the pull is stiffer then I perfer, but I can remedy this easily.

Negatives on the Rock Island: two fired .38 Super cases were in the hard plastic shipping box and they scratched the finish in several places. The grip panel screws look "used". Not acceptable in my opinion, but for the money, I'm not overly concerned.

I plan to function test it this weekend.
