I finally had a chance to run a few (too few) rounds through my Glock 29. 50 rounds of CCI Blazer, followed by 20 Winchester Silvertips. First impressions:
As expected, it ran like a top. No malfunctions of any kind. Recoil is snappy, considerably sharper than a Glock 20, but not painful or uncontrollable. I fitted one magazine with a Pearce finger rest floorplate, which made a noticeable difference in comfort and controllability.
The first 10 rounds, fired at a pretty quick pace into a standard B-8 target at 7 yards, resulted in 6 holes in the X-ring and 4 in the 10-ring. Farthest shots were 2.5 inches apart. Not too shabby. I do better with my G20, but given the shorter sight radius and lighter weight of the G29, I'm not at all unhappy with that. More practice will surely improve my shooting with this little beast.
Silvertips kicked noticeably harder than the Blazers, and also seemed louder. This is to be expected; the Blazers are on the mild side, while Winchester's load is one of the few full-power 10mm loads still produced by the major ammo companies. Blazers are 200 grains @ 1050 fps nominal for 490 ft-lbs; Silvertips are 175 g @ 1290 nominal for 649 ft-lbs. Not sure what actual velocities are produced by the G29's short barrel, but they're surely lower than that.
Three minor annoyances cropped up; two due to the gun and one due (partially) to me. First, the front sight almost completely fills the notch in the rear; there's just the tiniest sliver of daylight on either side. This does absolutely nothing to help rapid sight alignment. I should mention that these are the Glock-branded, factory-installed night sights. The second little irritation also springs from the sights. The tritium vial in the front sight is slightly convex, just enough to catch some light and cause a bit of glare. Annoying but not intolerable.
Finally, gotta own up to a mildly embarrassing moment. To preface, I'll say that I spend 90% of my range time shooting full-sized 1911s and Glocks. When I change mags, I maintain a full firing grip, put my trigger finger up on the side of the frame, and thumb the mag catch. After the first mag through the G29, I went through that sequence of motions and stood there for a few seconds thinking, "Wait a minute, isn't something supposed to happen? Isn't the magazine supposed to fall out?"
Sure enough, my little finger, curled around the front of the magazine, had thwarted my efforts. Damn. I guess I have to change my technique when shooting this little guy. It feels a bit strange to have to stick your little finger straight out when you change mags. Seems like the kind of thing they'd teach you in the French army, doesn't it?
