I finally had a chance to run a few (too few) rounds through my Glock 29. 50 rounds of CCI Blazer, followed by 20 Winchester Silvertips. First impressions:

As expected, it ran like a top. No malfunctions of any kind. Recoil is snappy, considerably sharper than a Glock 20, but not painful or uncontrollable. I fitted one magazine with a Pearce finger rest floorplate, which made a noticeable difference in comfort and controllability.

The first 10 rounds, fired at a pretty quick pace into a standard B-8 target at 7 yards, resulted in 6 holes in the X-ring and 4 in the 10-ring. Farthest shots were 2.5 inches apart. Not too shabby. I do better with my G20, but given the shorter sight radius and lighter weight of the G29, I'm not at all unhappy with that. More practice will surely improve my shooting with this little beast.

Silvertips kicked noticeably harder than the Blazers, and also seemed louder. This is to be expected; the Blazers are on the mild side, while Winchester's load is one of the few full-power 10mm loads still produced by the major ammo companies. Blazers are 200 grains @ 1050 fps nominal for 490 ft-lbs; Silvertips are 175 g @ 1290 nominal for 649 ft-lbs. Not sure what actual velocities are produced by the G29's short barrel, but they're surely lower than that.

Three minor annoyances cropped up; two due to the gun and one due (partially) to me. First, the front sight almost completely fills the notch in the rear; there's just the tiniest sliver of daylight on either side. This does absolutely nothing to help rapid sight alignment. I should mention that these are the Glock-branded, factory-installed night sights. The second little irritation also springs from the sights. The tritium vial in the front sight is slightly convex, just enough to catch some light and cause a bit of glare. Annoying but not intolerable.

Finally, gotta own up to a mildly embarrassing moment. To preface, I'll say that I spend 90% of my range time shooting full-sized 1911s and Glocks. When I change mags, I maintain a full firing grip, put my trigger finger up on the side of the frame, and thumb the mag catch. After the first mag through the G29, I went through that sequence of motions and stood there for a few seconds thinking, "Wait a minute, isn't something supposed to happen? Isn't the magazine supposed to fall out?"

Sure enough, my little finger, curled around the front of the magazine, had thwarted my efforts. Damn. I guess I have to change my technique when shooting this little guy. It feels a bit strange to have to stick your little finger straight out when you change mags. Seems like the kind of thing they'd teach you in the French army, doesn't it?

Thanks for your G29 report!

I agree the Pearce replacement extensions for the mags help a great deal when shooting hot loads and for control during fast shooting.

On my G29, I swapped out the factory sights for Trijicons, and the sight picture is perfect.

This compact powerhouse is a great carry piece. I've grown to like it more and more in the time I've had it.

On GT's 10Ring, someone posted G29 chronograph data a while back on various factory 10mm loads. If you're interested, you might do a Search there. IIRC, the Winchester 10mm STHPs were clocking at about 1120fps or so. (The G29's barrel is 3.8").

Winchester's claimed 1290fps for the 175gn 10mm STHPs is fictional. Supposedly they use a 5.5" factory test barrel to achieve that velocity, but more recent chrono data, using actual 10mm pistols with stock barrels, suggests velocity well over 100fps less.

From the G20's stock 4.6" tube, chrono reports on the 10Ring have found the 10mm STHPs running in the 1150fps-1180fps range.

From 5" 10mm pistols, like the S&W 1006 or Delta Elite, it's a bit faster, around 1200-1220fps.

:cool:

agtman,

Do you use your G29 as your carry gun? If so, what ammo do you carry?

I'm going to place an order with Double Tap on Monday. McNett's 180 grain Gold Dot load looks like fun :evil:

When I carry it, it's loaded up with either DT's 180gn 10mm Gold Dot HPs or Georgia Arms' 155gn GDHPs. It's a tie between those loads accuracy-wise. (Reliability has been flawless).

But this pistol really shoots a number of different 10mm factory loads very well. It also likes:

* Hornady's 180gn XTPs @ 1180fps/556fpe;

* PMC's 170gn JHPs @ an alleged 1200fps/543fpe;

* Winchester's 175gn STHPs;

* CorBon's 150 JHPs @ 1325fps/585fpe.

Hope this helps.

Lennyjoe,

I'm curious why you say that. I've run thousands of rounds of Blazer through my G20 with absolutely no malfunctions, no unusual amount of fouling, no wear or damage to any parts, or any other problems.

Something about the aluminum cases that I don't care for. Just a pet peeve I guess. I had a case blow out in my new .357 and it damaged the cylinder. Haven't used it ever since.

One day I'll have a G29 for CCW. :)

BTW, do you reload? If not you need to look into it to get the full effect out of the 10MM :D

Neat, I admire anyone who shoots a 29. Heck, I barely can handle a 27! I've also noticed 10mm silvertips are hot. I know someone who complained of the recoil with them in the full sized 20.
