Well, I finally broke down and bought the gun I've been drooling over lately.

It is a S&W 629-3 3" .44mag w/unfluted cylinder and full lug barrel.

Now i need some help with a OWB holster recommendation for the gun.

I probably paid a little more than necessary($500), but I don't see these everyday(never) locally.

So what do you think? How did i do? And most of all what holster?

Also, round butt right?

Steve

Hey steve, you got the gun I have been drooling over lately too:D. That should be quite the little flamethrower......Maybe we need to get that washington shoot going so I can see that little beast in person......BTW, I don't see them too often either, and yeah, it's a roundbutt;) ......tom

$500 seems to be about right for N-frame snubbies in excellent condition. I use Don Hume holsters. The Double Nine is a pancake you can get with or without a thumb break.
Nice little hand cannon you have there. The 3 inchers are a blast (yes pun is intended) to shoot. And if you haven't figured it out yet, yes your butt is round.

Very nice looking gun. I love 3" K-frames, and I've found myself thinking about branching out to other size frames in shorter barrels. I've been oggling the 3" .44mags lately myself, and I don't particularly like the recoil of a .44mag in a larger barrel gun. Maybe I should get one to use as a .44spl. That picture of yours makes that even more likely. That is one pretty gun (now where is that "drool" icon).

Gun Nut that looks like a Lew Horton special. Can you verify that? I have the model 29 version with the unfluted cylinder and L-frame barrel. But mine doesn't have the modified cylinder latch.

I have that exact gun...unfluted cylinder and full lug barrel. I love it. Very fun to shoot! Enjoy! :D

Damn, over a week and I still haven't even shot it.....

My dealer has a new gun like BluesBear posted, but I like my full lug/unfluted cylinder better. Plus, it was $100 cheaper.

Stupid question time:

Is the M24 on the same frame (N) as the M29? I've always wanted a 3 inch 629, but in all honesty I"d probably do 99% of my shooting with .44specials, so if it was on a smaller frame .... :)

The 24 is on the same frame as a 29.

The only difference is the 24 has a tapered, standard lug barrel while the 29 has either a heavy barrel with a standard lug or full lugged barrel.

If you want a lighter .44 special find a 696 five shot built on the L frame.

Dear GunNut!!

I too have exactly the same gun you describe. I had a holster made for it by FIST and it is perfect. I called them up and discussed my wants/needs with the head guy there - Jim Murnak - and got a quality leather holster for a very, very reasonable price. FYI http://www.fist-inc.com/. Good shooting;)
