I think you have a heavily sporterized WWII Italian Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine. Looks like the sights and magazine have been changed, and the stock was cut down to remove where the bayonet would attach.
If it were mine, I'd do some inspecting and, if nothing alarmed me, I'd go fire it and then carefully check the fired case.
There is a 6.5x53 cartridge, but it's a rimmed one. The 6.5 Carcano is rimless, so there is no way the 6.5x53 Dutch Mannlicher would chamber in a 6.5x52 rifle. It is also highly doubtful that someone would convert from a somewhat common round like the 6.5x52 to a veryuncommon one like the 6.5x53R.
That's interesting. It is a carcano action but they normally feed from an enbloc clip...which would be a challenge with the 03A3 bottom metal. It could be any caliber. Id make a chamber cast.
I'd guess the rest of the 03 internal box magazine components were used and altered. It wouldn't be too difficult, given that the 6.5x52 rim is close to the same diameter as the .30-06 (.448" vs. .473"), and OAL of the 6.5x52 is only slightly shorter than .30-06 M2 ball (3.02" vs. 3.34")
After WWII alotta country wouldnt allow "military" caliber, so they were often alterd while being 'sporterized', and deeping the throat/neck a milimeter or so, would , in essence, change it to something a civilian could own.
The new mag certainly is an improvement , if it works.
Mexico is like that too, no Military calibers.....though someone forgot to tell the criminals that....
