Just got a Pietta 1858 Remington from Cabelas. I'm very impressed with the quality and anyone considering one of these should not hesitate!
I am confused about cap size. I have a bunch of CCI #11 caps and they are WAY too big. I am considering getting Tresco nipples from the Possibles Shop but have seen conflicting info on what size cap they are for. Does the Remington #10 caps fit the Tresco better than CCI #11? Do the Remington #10 caps fit the stock Pietta nipples better?

Thanks!

Problem with the Pietta is they almost never tell you what cap to use. then when they do its usually always wrong. i have found the best thing to do is go to your local gunshop and have the nipples matched to some caps. I would not change your nipples right now. when you need to change the nipples tresco is the way to go. IF your unsure on the tresco its best to call up the possible shop and ask them. They can check there master catalog. A few years ago i bought and 1851 pietta. Brand new from cabellas. there was a little piece of paper that said to use number 11 caps. Well i went out and bought them. to find out later on it takes number 10. You have to remember these guns come from italy. The stock nipples are fine. Being brand new if the #11s are too loose get the number 10s and shoot them. Dont change unless you have to. or are experinceing problems. Most of the time people think they have to switch and think there gun is unique. Its not unique we all have them. Just some people like to spend money on things they really dont need to.

Unfortunately the honest truth is that caps, and many nipples, are not built to a precise standard, and the tolerances require dimensional precision to 3 decimal places. That's partly the reason the sides are corrugated.

The best you're going to be able to do is try different sizes and brands until you find one that fits, and be prepared to go through it again if and when you change nipples. And keep in mind that it's not uncommon to find a batch of caps that are larger or smaller than other batches of the same brand and size.

You don't get three decimal place precision for $.04 each.

I second the recommendation of Treso nipples. They are made of a proprietary bronze alloy that is very durable in this application. Excellent quality.

Don't know anything about the Tresco Nipples. However; I know the #11's are too big. Remington #10's fit perfect if you can find them. CCI #10's will be a little tight. None of the local shops around here carry #10's, so I have to order them.

Same problem on my Pietta '58. The CCI caps spin on the stock nipples but I had a tin of "German #11" caps I got with the Hawken and they fit just right. Part number is 1075 made by Dynamit Nobel. They seem to be just a hair smaller than regular #11's.

I have absolutly no experience with bp. That was a great way to phrase it if you want alot of folks to look at the thread though. +1 lol.

If you are near a Cabelas location, they stock both Remington and CCI #10 & #11. The catalog only lists Remington 10s and 11s. CCI only 11s. The kicker is through the catalog, you can only order 1000.

Remington # 10 caps fit all my Pietta made Remingtons like a glove / They also fit my Uberti made Remingtons better than any other , but the fit gets better after the first round of fire ..I`ve never pinched caps ..way too much trouble for fat fingers ...It`s can be hard enough capping with caps that fit right .

+1 :) Be sure the tight fitting caps slide all the way down on the nipples when capping.

Thanks for the replies! I guess I'll try Gander Mountain next time I am near one (about 2 hrs away). I have had no luck finding Remington caps locally and Cabelas only sell then in lots of 1000. I figured the Tresso nipples would be a good upgrade anyway but wanted to make sure the CCI 11 cap fit them. I have read in different forums where the 11 fits and others say the Rem 10 fits the Tressos. Sounds like I'll just have to find some 10's to try with my stock nipples. By the way, "Nipples" is an interesting Google search word :what:
