Caps for Pietta 1858 Remington

So I got the 1858 Remington with a 5.5 inch barrel from Cabelas, it's a Pietta, and I put the CCI number 11 magnum caps on it, no powder or ball just to test it out. It misfired on about 2/3 of them. I figured my caps must be bad, so I put them on my 1851 Colt and they fired just fine. They kind of mushed the ignition material into the nipples in the 1858 Remington, though.

So I picked up some regular CCI number 11 caps, not the magnums, and tried those out. They worked just fine, no misfires. Just posting to add to the data out there. My 1858 Remington wouldn't digest the magnum caps, while my 1851 Colt likes them better than the regular caps. Your results may vary...

You could tighten the Hammer screw that is on the forward part of the grip around where your ring finger touches the grip.

That would increase the hammer striking blow to make it fire those caps off but all of my C&B revolvers & Cap Lock Rifles use Remington #10 or #11 caps just fine, no magnum fire here..

I've not had any problems using the magnums on my 1858 - it might just be an adjustment thing like voodoochile mentioned. OR it could be your nipples, there is not a lot of consistency in nipple design on these things sometimes.

4 out of 5 Pietta 1858 Remingtons like # 10 remington caps ...no pinching .

CCI Magnum Caps are ment for Rifles not revolvers...But will fire in a Walker.
They take a heavier blow to ignite them.
Why would you use a Magnum cap on a Rev anyway?
The only reason I could see is that they were all that were available...and then I'd probly just order what I wanted instead a buyin' Mags.

Well, I bought a case of the magnums to use with my rifle - so now they do double duty with the 1858 too once I ran out of the #11 standards.
The only difference (to the naked eye) between the two is that the magnums have more compound in them....................and a good many of the standards I compared had next to no compound in them and some were even empty - so I don't use them anymore for anything.

#10 Remington caps are not available in my area. The #10 CCI caps had serious reliability issues. Just the moisture from getting cold and warming up, or from being under my coat during hunting was enough to ruin the caps. I picked up the magnums when my local Sportsman's Warehouse was out of the regular #11 caps and I was pleased with their performance in my 1851, so I got them again. They worked very well with paper cartridges. I had no idea they were meant for rifles.

Thanks for the tip on the hammer screw, Voodoochile. I'll have to do that. It did appear a bit weaker than it should.
