Hey guys, just joined the board and i have a quick question. i have been shooting since i can remember and got my first shotgun at 13, and i want to buy a .22 rifle just to plink around with and have fun. anyone have any suggestions on a good starter .22? thanks!

You could do some searching, but that's alright. ;)

A Ruger 10/22 would be a great choice for plinking, if you're looking for a semi-automatic. They're accurate enough, you can get inexpensive high capacity magazines for them, and you can find just about any accessory or upgrade you can think of. They're also relatively inexpensive.

Otherwise, Savage makes reasonably priced bolt action .22's that shoot really nice, or if you've got a little more money to spend a Marlin 39A lever-action .22 is a great choice. The set trigger on some of the CZ .22's might be nice if you're serious about your plinking.

There are a thousand different .22's to spend your money on, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Welcome to The High Road.

I agree with the above. Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin lever action.

Happy shooting and keep the brass flying!

CZ-452 is the best bang for the buck. Quite possibly the most accurate and well built .22LR bolt action gun short of an Anschutz.

It comes in a variety of styles ranging in price from the low $200's to high $300's and the top of the line ones at $375 or so are as good as any $500 Ruger or $700 Kimber 22 you'll get - better IMO.

You can buy a cheap 22 but eventually you'll want something better and the CZ-452 is it.

Welcome to THR!

One of my sons has a Marlin, the other a Savage, and I have a Ruger 10/22. Of the three the Ruger is the most dependable. Great fun for plinking.

Marlin lever gun is nice, Marlin 60 good auto, along with Ruger 10/22.

Select one, then buy as many different brands/types of ammo as you can find, and blaze away. This does 2 things..finds the ammo YOUR rifle likes, and you get to shoot a bunch finding that ammo.

The Rem Nylon 66 I had as a teen liked everything Except the Rem Golden Bullet Hollow Point...A Rem gun that hated Rem ammo..go figure.

I think it depends on what you want to shoot.

I have two 22 rifles I especially like to shoot. One is a Ruger 10/22, the other is a Henry lever action.

Plenty of tube fed semi-autos out there if that trips your trigger.

Not a huge fan of bolt action 22s, but if thats what you want, there are a lot of them otu there too.

Welcome to a great forum.

My first .22 was and is a Ruger 10/22 bought over 30 years ago and still going as good as new.

The CZ is a good bolt action .22 its more on the upper end along with Kimbers

For a lot less money the Savage is a tack driver its just a plain jane working mans rifle.

In lever actions the Marlin 39 is one of the best.

A neat handy yet seldom seen these days rifle is the Browning takedown semi auto .22

Taurus makes a few nice Winchester clones these are pump actions and are a joy to use and handle, they bring back memories of the old shooting galleries and also times spent on a farm with rifle in hand a box of shells and a few rusty old cans floating down the creek.

Whatever .22 rifle you decide on my advice is to not worry so much about the price even though its "only a .22" get a good quality .22 with fill your life with allot of memories and it will get allot more use than many of your centerfire firearms.

Try as many out first even if only handling them for a while in the store, fit and balance are important not costs especially if money saved needs to be spent again to upgrade.

Another vote for the 10/22. I've fed it little but uber-cheap ammo without a single hiccup. Reasonably accurate and dead-reliable. And it will last pretty much forever if you take care of it. Many 10/22s from the 60s are still seeing range time today.

They are relatively inexpensive and can be found just about anywhere.

Another plus for the 10/22. If you have a Wal-Mart nearby (who doesn't?) you might be able to find one there for around $200. Though, some aren't carrying firearms anymore due to lack of sales or profit or what have you.

Welcome. Welcome. Welcome.

I vote for the 10/22. I have one & I love it.
But recently I've gotten a hankering for the Henry Lever action. I need to add a lever action .22 to my collection.

thanks alot for all the responses so quick! and yeah, i know i could have searched, but i wanted some personal response. anyway, i am looking for a fairly cheap semiauto to just have fun with, nothing serious. and it sounds like the ruger 10/22 is the majority opinion for that. thanks again guys! ill keep updated about what i end up doing

Forget the 10/22, get the Marlin 60 for $120. The 10/22 is nice, but offers nothing over the 60 unless you plan to customize which it appears you do not plan on doing.
