My mother has a nickel-plated Colt Cobra and recently got her CPL. She'd like to pocket carry, but keeps getting hung up on the Cobra's fully exposed hammer. Does anyone know of a hammer modification that would let me put a bobbed hammer on the gun without permanently modifying its current hammer or the firearm? I'd like to avoid purchasing a new pistol for her if at all possible.

Thanks!

You can have a new "D" frame hammer fitted.
This is a gunsmith job since the hammers typically need a t least some fitting and adjustment.

Good sources for installation would be:

Pittsburgh Handgun Headquarters
1330 Center Ave.
Pittsburgh, PA 15229
(412) 766-6100

Cylinder & Slide, Inc.
245 E. 4th Street
Fremont, NE 68026
(402) 721-4277

C&S will be slow and rather expensive, but they do good work.
I'm not sure Pittsburgh will do hammer bob jobs, but for price and turnaround, they are very good.

Of course, it's VERY possible Colt themselves will do it, and they would be my first choice.

For a replacement hammer, contact:

Note that a hammer from a Detective Special, Agent, or Cobra will fit since these are interchangeable on those models.

Possible alternative to bobbing the hammer

Try to find the add-on hammer shroud, preferably the factory optional one. This shields the sides and tip of the hammer to prevent snagging, yet still allows thumb cocking, akin to the Smith & Wesson "Bodyguard" style revolvers. Or try "googling" W. Waller & Son (a range bag maker of some note) and see if they still offer theirs.

I cannot remember which company made them, someone used to make or maybe still does, grips that shroud the hammer. They are kind of ugly, but may work.

Those were the Bianchi Holster Company grips.
They were rubber, round butt, with finger grooves, and had sides that completely covered the hammer, leaving the tip exposed so it could still be cocked.

These were made only for the S&W "J" and "K" frame round butt models, and have been discontinued for years.
They do turn up on eBay from time to time.
