Hey, I need some advice here. First time out with my new S&W 442 and after a few cylinders I had a problem. I was shooting UMC 130gr ammo and with a full cylinder it was just cycling with no firing on live ammo. I emptied it and found that the firing pin was still coming out so I am confused. I tried those rounds again later and they worked. Any advice before I contact S&W? Try some different ammo or do you think it is a gun issue? Not good to not have confidence in your CCW choice.

the firing pin could be broken and depending on how the end is positioned at any given time would determine if it went off

When it doesn't go off when it should, it is always a very good idea to stop right there and see where everything is relative to everything else. I would suspect a timing problem. Now, whether it's dirt or a part problem, I don't know, but with a new gun, I suspect the gun. Big time. I wouldn't hesitate to call S&W.

My brand-new 642 did something similar.

Took it to the range and it wouldn't actually fire.

Confused the heck out of me. Ran it all the way around the cylinder about 3 or 4 times and it finally started hitting primers.

It's worked great ever since.

Based on the experience I had a couple of years ago when I bought an S&W 340Sc, S&W isn't properly lubing or cleaning up their revolvers before they leave the factory; mine was DRY inside, and there were a few burrs that shouldn't have been there. I stripped it down and did a mild trigger job on it myself (used the Jerry Miculek video Trigger Jobas a guide) and after lube and reassembly it's been 100% ever since.

Thanks for the advice guys. I ran it on Sunday and it worked fine. I'll try some lube and see if that also helps. Thanks
